    Mazda 6, 2005, 1.8, petrol.

Today it started making a high-pitched noise as I turned the steering wheel, especially as low speeds( setting off, carpark manoeuvres etc.). A little whine if I rev the accelerator while stationary. Whine settles to a quieter but constant level while driving at cruising speeds. No warning lights come on.

Any ideas please? And, if you know, is it a major job? Expensive?

I'll bring to my local garage on Monday, obviously, but would like advance warning if possible.

    TIA

Check the fluid level and the belt, otherwise I would say the pump is on its way out.

is the power steering reservoir low on fluid, there should be a mark on the side of the bottle, just top it up if its low, it more than likely takes ATF but it should say on the bottle or else check the owners manual

Weren't alot of mazda 6's recalled with steering rack problems?

It might be worth ringing you local dealer to find out if your car was ever done.

Thanks for replies and suggestions. I'll give the car the day off tomorrow, check the fluid levels as suggested and bring to garage on Monday.

Apparently it was the power-steering pump that was at fault. Replaced now, and car is as quiet as a church mouse again.
