Hi, does anyone know what the typical cut-off points are for each of the Provincial boys and youths championships as well as the nationals? I want to see what target i need to reach to get into some of them and whether i should enter them or not. Thanks in advance for replies!

By the way, I suppose we could use this thread to show the cut-off points for any GUI championships so feel welcome to post in this!

When I was playing boys' championships, cutoff was usually around 5 for all except Ulster, which was more like 8 or 9 IIRC.

It would be very good to have a thread that showed cut-off points for all championships.

To answer your question, you can't know the cut-off. It's the same as college courses for the CAO - it varies from year to year based on the level of entrants. People might give you a steer from last year, but it does fluctuate a little bit.

Best advice is to enter everything close to the deadline (assuming your handicap is on the slide). The reserve lists are pretty generous, and you might sneak onto that.

If you do get on the reserve list, consider going down to the tournament, make yourself known to the GUI as a reserve, and you'll get out 90% of the time.

A health warning though. As many ex-junior golfers will tell you, making handicap your primary goal, and fretting about every single decimal and competition entry is rarely a productive way to improve your golf. Boys & Youths are not the be all and end all.

I understand that the handicap quota varies but Im guessing there is not major change from year to year, like say Connacht Boys might be around a six handicap.

Would anyone even though what the field size would be as that could help!

    Thanks for the advice too!

On the GUI website it has who has already entered in a lot of csaes so you can get a rough estimate. All the application forms will tell you the size of the field.
