You could read the article
The explanation of this 'extreme supermoon' is quite simple. The moon's orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse.
In the end, there is no reason to fear the "Extreme Supermoon" Saturday night.
I love this. Surely if you dont want people to fear this event you don't give it a name like that.

Now that i think about it though it does sound a little like a superman getting his ass out.

With the fog and lack of dense cloud over the last 3 nights the moon has been nothing short of spectacular. 2 Nights ago I was on my balcony and almost lost the plot with the beauty up in the sky: it was like a full 360 degree Moonbow!*

I almost lost the plot like that Double Rainbow dude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQSNhk5ICTI

    *No drink or drugs involved

I will agree that he took it a bit too far but I'd also kinda feel sorry for anyone who can't take real pleasure in witnessing special events in nature - they can affect you in a deeply profound way if you let them.

Beats seeing a junkie strung out in a McDonald's toilet any day! :)

So what exactly is meant to happen?

the moon is just meant to be slightly bigger?
... no different shade of colour?

    14% more free moon tonight.

The moon wasn't 14% bigger than usual. The 14% difference refers to the size difference between the moons apogee (Furthest point of orbit from Earth) to the moons perigee (closest point of orbit to the earth). The moon last night at it's perigee was 625 miles (1,006 kms) closer to Earth than this time last month so there was only a 0.3% difference in size appearance at it's perigee. The size difference was hardly noticeable to the naked eye but still the closest the moon has been to Earth in 18 years...
