What's the verdict on these lads?
Relative of mine looking at buying one. It is the TR version and only has around 34k miles on the clock

    Good or bad?

Suffers from all the modern diesel engine problems, dual mass flywheels, injectors etc. They give electrical problems as well. Never drove one so I don't know how they drive but i'd say its probably nice to drive, big boot and plenty of room for passangers.
Don't be fooled by 'the best built cars in the world' on this one.

They're a heap of the brown stuff OP.

They have as they say "no redeeming features". The parking brake is a right old PITA and in typical Toyota fashion it has an interior that is about as cheap as a packet of Taytos. Surprisingly firm over the bumps as well.

Also, UK cars (which a TR model is) have different suspension settings and are less hard wearing than the Paddy spec models, which have a "rough road package" fitted as standard.

Yes the Paddy spec has the suspension 15mm higher or something like that. The inside of them is boring and blad.

they are very heavy on read break pads, I have 50k kms on the clock on a 10 reg and just got its 2nd set of rear brake pads, I questioned this with the main dealer and this is a common thing to replace pads so often

I think they are actually not a bad looking car at all. Certainly a huge improvement in the looks department on the old model.

08 onwards is significantly revised over the earlier models. New more powerful engine and 6speed box. I have driven both and they newer is noticeably better. No word of any serious issues either.

Is it the new or old model you are looking at as the old model was still sold until mid 2009?

I was looking around a 2010 new shape UK TR spec model the other week (not for me), it wasn't that badly finished on the inside for a middle of the range model, definately no worse than a similar Mondeo interior. Plenty of room for both front and rear passengers, alot bigger on the inside than they appear on the outside and a decent size boot. Does exactly as it says on the tin.

2.0 d-4d has 125bhp and was carried over from the old model, has been around since 2006 so it is tried and tested by now. Not class leading but not the bucket of crap being protrayed here either.

While I know that the Avensis is a bog standard family car, is 125bhp not quite poor for a 2.0L diesel these days?

Not really, it was the standard back in 2006 when launched. The new Mondeo 2.0 litre starts at 115bhp, Passat 2.0 CR upto early last year started at 110bhp. Current Audi A4 2.0 litre starts at 120bhp. Opel Insignia 2.0 litre starts at 130bhp. Fiat 1.9 unit starts at 120bhp. All detuned to keep emmissions low and squeeze into the lower tax brands.

BMW always had the march on them for getting the most out of their 2.0 litre diesel while still getting into the lower emmissions tax brackets.

Damn.. if I had known I could have spend another 4 grand for that illusive 11bhp

 Whats with the sarcasm, do you not agree that your VRS is putting out about average power for a modern 2L diesel thats not tuned purely for emissions?

I wasn't saying you should have bought a 320d, I was just giving an example of a 2.0L diesel that I knew the power of off hand, no need to get defensive

There are loads of 2.0L diesels putting out similar figures, hence why I was agreeing 170bhp was about average:

    Ford Mondeo 2.0L:160bhp
    Opel Insignia 2.0L: 160bhp
    Alfa 159 2.0L JTD: 170bhp
    Merc C 220 CDI(2.1L): 170bhp

Not to mention all the variants that VW stuck that 170bhp lump you have in to ;)

Funnily you found it convenient to point out that the BM had a massive 11bhp more :pac:

Strangely enough you found cars with 10bhp less afterwards

    Sarcasm

    Being defensive??
Welll. I wasnt being defensive in my post..
I was only pointing out to the Poster not to say 125bhp was a lot.
And along you came and proved my point

The poster you pointed that out to was me, even though I said 125bhp was low for a 2.0L :pac:

I don't know what the hell we are arguing about here, I confirmed that your VRS has average power for a 2.0L diesel!? Thats what I was posting all along! Average means some have more, and some have less.

I never said you should have bought a BMW or anything else!

If some have 160bhp, and others have 180bhp, then surely 170bhp is the average?

    :p

I would think 170bhp would be above average for a 2.0 diesel, average would be 140ish me thinks.
