Two PS3's/Two seperate Issues

First time posting in here but i have two issues.

One is my own PS3.bought on launch day in Ireland,60gb console.

Everything was going great with the PS3 for a while, then during play the controllers would start blinking and disconnect from the PS3.
The controllers would only start working again once connected (i know people will say - plug in the controllers to charge) but even after FULLY charging both controllers it continued to happen. If i plugged the controllers in i would get the constant red light on the controller to show it was working ok and assigned to whatever port (1-4 etc) but as soon as i would remove the controller from the usb it would start blinking again.

At the time i googled and googled and googled some more on this problem, loads of people had the issue but no one really had a soloution.
in the end i got pissed off starting games for them to end badly because of the issue so i just left the ps3 as it was, occassionally using it for watching a few movies.
not exactly what i should be doing with such an expensive investment really....one damn expensive dvd player...

my question regarding this is,has anyone else experienced this?did you solve it,if so,how??
although i havent tried different controllers on the ps3,is it possible that both my controllers are fecked?
its obviously a connectivity issue,is it bluetooth?is there something causing interference?

the 2nd issue is actually with my nephews PS3.
AFAIK its also a launch day 60gb model, the disc drive appears to be gone in it on him.Wont recognise discs at all.
Hes been into either Game or Gamestop (probably both) and he was told that they would send it away and he'd get a reconditioned PS3 for €180...is this right?
Im not exactly the biggest gamer or am very much in the know but is there people/shops that replace disc drives?anyone in galway?
if so,whats the damage on getting one done?

cheers people, hopefully i can get my own ps3 back in use at least.

Caveat: no I do not know this problem and never experienced it....

Read this thread before forking over repair money or dealing with Sony: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055795516

If these are launch day models then you paid a fortune for them. You most surely ahve a reasonable expectation that they would last longer than merely 3-4years.

My advice would be only deal with the retailer you purchased it from and quote the relevant consumer rights/legislation. Also, point out (politely) that you may be forced to open a dispute in the small claims court.

Is it one of more controllers?

If its one, then its probably the controller, if its both, its probably the Console.

Your controller connects via Bluetooth, so its possible that there is radio interference in/near the location of the Console.

Have you any wireless devices nearby? Try turning them off.

Try moving it to a different location, maybe a friends house.

Try someone elses controller/s with your console.

Make sure the System Software is up to date.

After that I think you're into repair/swapping out Bluetooth card/board, you can get these here... http://mrmodchips.co.uk/

I just noticed this was my first post! Hello Everyone!

Following on from the above suggestions:

    For your controllers
Can you try your nephews controllers with your PS3?
It sounds to me like the batteries in your controllers are simply not holding their charge (like any old rechargeable batteries). If his work, then you just need some replacement controllers, or you can probably get batteries of Ebay (pulling controllers apart is really easy, I've done it a couple of times when the sticks get stuck from people eating pizza then playing my games). If not, then it's a console issue.

    For your nephew's
I recently had a YLOD and in researching that, I found that Bluray drive issues like this are quite common. You can get replacement drives from Ebay and the like for a lot less than the cost of a re-conditioned console, and they are very easy to replace as well.. (And if your console is shot, then you could put your drive into his!).

There are plenty of details videos on YouTube that describe how to get into a PS3 (don't get sucked in by companies selling these - they are the same videos!). From memory it's a matter of removing 1 sticker, then about 12 screws and 3 ribbon-style cables to replace the drive.. it's one of the first component you get access to when you open a PS3.
