Hi ok here goes i dive an 06 accord i have about a year and it drives perfext always has, but since i bought it, ive never been able to shift down a gear unless my revs and speed are low enough for that gear

For example say im on the m50 and im in 5th gear and i decide i want to drop down to 4 th gear it literally will not go into 4th gear until i lower my speed then it will go in.

Anyone got any ideas? It does drive perfect otherwise but it is annoying at first i just thought maybe it was some safety on the engine, but the more i thought of it it jsut doesnt make sense plus i know someone who has a n accord and there doesnt do it. Like is there something someone couldve fitted to it?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would think it would drop into fourth at anything below 110mph (or more probably), what speed do you have to drop to before it will go into 4th for you?

Ive never checked exactly what speed but its not just fourth gear it wont drop down any gears till you lower your speed and revs so basically you cant engine break at all. it will come out of gear but wont pop into the lower gear till you slow down

In any manual car I've driven if it will do 60 in 2nd you'll get it into 50 odd while in 2nd no bother, if it does 90 in 3rd you could drop from 4th to 3rd at 80 odd. It would go in no prob at all.

I know ive never come acroos this either, and some of my friends that would know about cars have driven it and cant get there heads around why it is that way. If needs be tommorrow when im driving ill make note of the speeds at which it will drop down.

Its a 2 litre petrol engine if that helps.

:D i have tried it numerous times.

I know that what everyone keeps saying i just got it serviced but even when i puicked it up i missed all the mechanics but when i explained to it to one the men that works there in honda he said hed never heard of that before and told me to come back on monday hed get soemone to have a look at it. But just thought id post on here see if anyone had any ideas.

It sounds like you are describing a non sychromesh gearbox, which hasn't existed for years.

On a modern gearbox, it easy to match different engine speeds to axle speeds, as the gears are engaged via Baulk rings, which allow easy meshing of gears

Sychronised meshing, or synchromesh gearing allows for these speed changes to be achieved smoothly.

It seems unlikley thatyour baulk rings would all be damaged, leading to loss of synchromesh gearing in all gears.

    syncro is gone most probably

If that was the case up changing would be a ball ache too, not to mention the grinding.

OP it could be many things from low oil, worn syncro, worn linkages, no grease to a software issue going on the info you have supplied.

I'd just take it to the garage and see what they say and then update the thread as your now going to get everyone giving wild suggestions from you need a new gearbox to the car is going to explode.

Unless of course anyone actually has experience of this and isn't just having a shot in the dark trying to answer it

I can't believe you drove around for a year and a half with this issue, while it was under warranty too, bummer.

No it wouldnt going up from 4th to 5th it would be the 5th gear syncro that is being used, when droping down from 5th to 4th its the 4th gear baulk ring that is being used to slow 4th gear down until syncronisation has accured
Syncros are a common fault in Honda gearboxes

I know well i have it a year now and the warranty liyerally just up stupid me, but like i said the car drives grand apart from that, there no problems changing up gears. Im going to pop up to a garage today so hopefully ill know whats what and ill let yehs all know what i get told.

It happens changing down in all gears so changing up from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th would all be noisy if it was the synchronized bits and bobs

ok time for an update i guess, ok so after me questioning why the gearbox wouldnt shift down easily it miracously seemed to start working on its own shifted down not a problem, of coarse i was delighted thought happys days its working, then now the last two days if i put the foot down, the revs are shooting up but the speedos not which im guessing means im going to be looking at a new clutch for it? :(

I'm thinking that for some reason the clutch wasn't fully disengaging when you pushed in the pedal. I'll let a mechanic take guesses as to what that reason was!
