I am desperate need of help with my Documentary and Production essay. It has to be in Wednesday and I am getting nowhere with it. I haven't got a clue what the quote means :(

Here is the question below, we have to give a meaning to quote and refer to 3 directers : Robert Flaherty, Leni Riefenstahl ,Michael Moore or John Ggrierson
‘’… the pleasures of non-fiction are every bit as complex as those which have been attributed to fictional forms and far less understood.’’ Michael Renov

Its a pretty open ended essay title. It just means that Documentaries (non-fiction) can be just as good as traditional (fiction) movies. So discuss that idea by refering to the films by those three directors.

If I were you I'd pick one film from each director.

Hey, the quote is from a book by Michael Renov called Theorizing Documentary. It's in the library. It's on Pg 6. Reading the rest of that page is very handy in understanding the quote. TBH she (lecturer) made it confusing by leaving the end of the quote on. Read it like this:

‘’… the pleasures of non-fiction are every bit as complex as those which have been attributed to fictional forms...’’

the "far less understood" is just flak to confuse you for some reason.

Basically as far as I figured it was talk about how you have to construct a documentary and perform it in the way you perform fiction. It doesn't only happen, you have to mess with it and shape it in your own image. That's what i got from it.

It's all evidenced in Man of Aran's bull**** where he made them do outdated practices just for entertainment and how Roger and Me had the chronology shifted around loads.

This is all my own personal interpretation of it. I think you can take a completely different angle with Nick Broomfield and Neasa NiChianain since they seem very similar in their style of questioning. I think they'd be good to talk about in reference to Michael Moore in that they force the documentary to happen so as to excite the viewer and such.

Anyway, yeah, there ya go, agree or disagree, it's all I can gather from it :P
