Just wondering what the course is like?Is it worth a visit? Or would Kilkea Castle be nicer?

Athy is a lovely golf course, not super hard or super tough, but an enjoyable, testing course with some very good holes on it. Kinda old style parkland layout, even though the "new" holes are probably only around 10 yrs open (if even ?)

Haven't played Kilkea Castle but I would guess its a bigger, tougher, modern style layout. Looks nice when driving in to the Castle.

The toughest part of Kilkea Castle is the climb over the gate as it's been closed for a couple of months now.

You'll enjoy Athy, nice course not very long but a good test and its always in good condition.

I am a member of Athy so slightly biased. Course is in great condition at the moment very little rough but fairways and tee boxes in perfect nick, greens are rolling really well given the time of the year.

It's parkland style not overly long and the green are it's big defense even at this time of the year. The new holes are six years old but there are a couple of new green opened in the last 18 months

Not surprised played there in an Open last summer and it was in terrible condition. The member we played with said that the hotel had closed down and the golf course was next. Pity, cause it wasn't a bad layout.

Played Athy for the first time lately and was pretty impressed, paradise if you are a big hitter off the tee.

Nice to read the comments re Athy. Played there this morning, greens are in great condition at the moment considering the harsh winter we've had. Anyone planning on playing it is in for a treat.

Heard today from one of the lads that Kilkea Castle was sold last week for €6mill hotel and Golf Course and that their aiming to have the golf course re-opened for the May Bank Holiday weekend

Played Athy for the first time yesterday evening and I really enjoyed it. You look at the card and think the yardage isn't all that much (played off the back) but there's plenty of defence on and around the greens.
I would assume the green keeper is a sadist because some of the holes were cut on the top of little mounds on the green that meant it sloped away from the hole on all sides :)
Bunkers were lacking a bit in sand alright (murphy's law - found a fairway bunker that had plenty of sand, just when the firm sand would have been grand).

It's a nice course off the tee, no tricks or surprises really.... 17th maybe the only hole where you'd have a doubt over the distance required from the tee, everything is is as you see it.

Lovely approach into the second par 5 - even with a wedge it's a shot with no bail-out (pin was at the back).
I imagine if the greens get fast it can be very difficult, but then maybe the holes get cut on the 'flat' bits ;)

I am a member good to hear you enjoyed. I am guessing the greens were 6,7,12,16 and 17. The current greenkeeper is with us three years or so and found some new hole locations a couple of time can really try your patience in a medal

Supposed to be doing a job on the bunkers in the near future, there are a few that are really lacking in sand in them.

Killerig, played it once, there were potholes in the greens when i played it as well.

The fella in the reception even quoted us 50euro each to play it. Straight in after a few holes to complain about the condition. Place was a disgrace.

I find Athy to be one of the most enjoyable courses I've ever played. Not a particularly hard course but very very enjoyable. There are a few other 'unsung' courses in that area I would rate highly for the same reasons - namely Portarlington and the Curragh.

Im a member there is an offer of 1000 for rest of this year and for all 2012. Covers 50 towards the bar. As far as I know they dont offer a country membership
Open week from 13th - 18th September coming up might be worth giving a call and talking to someone, last year they did a big recruitment drive during it

Cheers thanks for the info, I'll give them a ring and find out about the open week. From what I've been reading it sounds like a great course
