I've decided i want to treat myself to one, tomorrow if possible :)

where could i pick one up in Wexford/ Wicklow/ South Dublin?

looking at the likes of the Kestral DAS-6 or Meguiars G220 or similar.

any input or advice lads? i was looking at the halfords webiste, they have two polishers which seem "crap" but maybe i'm wrong?

Don't buy from Halfords for a Start. Why not just buy from Separate on here? He does a kit for people getting into Machine polishing :

    http://www.detailer.ie/store/index.php/featured/kestrel-starter-kit.html

Failing that, the DeWalt DW849 is an incredible bit of kit.

A twin head machine is better imo. That one seperatre has dont seem to be any great shakes. I was kinda disappointed when I seen it.

thats a tempting very deal. i don't have visa to buy online though, does he have a premises?

i had a feeling halfords wouldn't be worth a toss, their range is VERY limited.

There's no need for a dual head. If you don't know what you're doing as an amateur, you'll destroy a car faster with two heads.

The Kestrel unit's quite good. All a polisher's going to do is spin a mop/head at a speed - the skill is in the pads, and the polishes, and most importantly in the user holding the polisher. The better more expensive polishers have sealed bearings, slow start, and are tolerant of a bit of water - el cheapo Halfords crap isn't.

I've killed 2 polishers in 2 years. One was a very expensive unit, one wasn't. Ironically, the cheaper unit lasted longer than the one costing almost 6 times it's price.

I agree with you there. How did you burn the expensive one out? I used a twin head for a long time I found them a lovley machine to work with.

interesting that. i have a few old bonnets and bumpers hanging around that i'l trick around with first, i wont be attacking the car straight away :P

i have the detailing disease, but the swirls are really getting to me, the polisher wouldn't really be getting much work.

Actually I have mentioned here before Seperate does a detailing course that lasts half a day. I would love to do it.

You could try these if around New Ross.

    http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-machines/das-6-pro-dual-action-polisher/cat_81.html

There is a new version of the Kestrel polisher sold in the UK, with different branding.

It just decided to die. I thought it might be motor bushes at first, but it wasn't. She's start, run for 3/4 seconds, stop and not run again. Sent it back to the manufacturer but it was slightly out of warranty, and beyond economical repair.

Kestrel DA-6 dual action is supposed to be a good machine and easy to use.
    I am considering one myself.
Cleancar.ie in Wexford have them in stock if they are convenient to you.

I've been using a Makita 9227CB for the last 4 years and it hasn't missed a beat. I'd use it for at least 5 (sometimes 6) days a week, for 7-8 hours a day. Great piece of kit.

The Kestrel is a decent polisher for getting started using machines. Like Paint Doctor said, the results depend more on the pads/polisher/user then the machine itself.

The one that died was a Felsatis - nearly 350 euro's worth of kit. Got a DeWalt DW849 now, extremely happy with it. All my other power tools, bar the turbine, are DeWalt. Even if something goes wrong, they've a decent warranty, and a workshop here in Cork to carry out the work.

DAS-6! If you're just hobbying then it'll be perfect imo, I've had mine for years and apart from replacing the bushes once it's been perfect. Using 3M pads at the moment but I kinda prefer the CG hexlogics. CC do a good kit with the basics but it comes with Mezerna polishes.

Jaysus this is now officially a dilema.

both detailer.ie and cleancar.ie have the Kestral DAS-6 with the starter kit for 160 euro.

both detailer.ie and cleancar.ie are almost exactly 80km from my house (according to aa route planner)

both detailer.ie and cleancar.ie are within 5 minutes driving time of each other from my house (according to aa route planner)

both detailer.ie and cleancar.ie claim to have the kits in stock.

neither state their saturday opening times on their website, so it may well boil down to that :pac: i'l phone both in the morning and see whats what, and hopefully i'l be the proud owner of a new kestral in the afternoon :)

red is a great color to buff, it comes out so shinny. I had a seally variable speed polisher and was great, bit heavy and bulky but never missed a beat until it burnt down in my workshop fire, i'd definitely get another once the time comes to replace it

so, off i trotted this afternoon...

rang cleancar.ie, he said they were at some trade show or other and weren't open today but it was business as usual on Monday.

rang detailer.ie, no answer, thought sod it, i'd spin on up anyway for the day out. he was closed.

but all wasn't lost, while i was in Blanchardstown i popped into halfords and got some goodies on their 3 for 2 offer :) and the woman enjoyed the other shopping Blanchardstown had to offer :pac:

so this is officially now on the long finger :)

Cleancar accept Laser card as far as I am aware

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

how embarrassing, both of them accept laser, its written on their homepages, i never checked that, i just clicked the direct links to the products on page one and asumed they didn't because the internet and laser cards seem to clash.

thats great news :) thanks for drawing my attention lads... now to toss a coin :pac:
