I've been a member for a couple of years but my presence has become more prevalent since going self employed last year. I will generally "connect" with someone within a couple of days of meeting them with a quick thank you etc. I do have it linked with twitter, which is in turn linked to my blog of which might have 1-3 posts per month. I haven't got much business from it but I'd still be inclined to remain a part of it and continue to expand my connections, rather than have zero presence. It may well just hit home with someone at some stage down the line to give me a call after viewing my LinkedIn profile.

I tend not to send messages on there unless I don't have the email/phone details of someone I need to get in contact with and even then, it would generally be me passing work on rather then hunting for sales.

I'm just looking to get an idea of how people are using LinkedIn to promote themselves or their business, if at all.

I think linkedin is more about the person and networking than selling. IE you meet a person and then three years later need to ask them a question so it's easy to find them on Linkedin. I distinctly dislike it as a sales too unless its' to partner with someone for mutual benefit.

It's also great for people applying for jobs as it's a bonus (in my opinion) when they link to their linkedin profile on their cover letter / email.

Totally agree with Ronan about Linkedin. It's not a sales platform, unless you are selling yourself.

It's also a hell of a lot better than keeping a load of business cards in a large file that can never be found when really needed!

I have a linkedin account but very few people I would be interested in linking to are on there. Some have facebook accounts (I hate facebook) and very, very few are on twitter. It's a shame. I have made some good contacts through twitter, mostly people I haven't actually met in person but who work in the same field as me and who are quite good at passing on interesting work-related links or job opportunities (I'm freelance working in the area of research/academia). I don't link to people for the sake of it, I try to keep it limited to folks who are in some way connected to my field of work (ie no chatty school friends or distant cousins etc). It's a job-seeking resource but not a primary one, you still can't beat meeting people in person or getting word-of-mouth recommendations.
