Insurance question for those of you who drive a 250bhp - 350bhp sports car

    Hi All

Trying desperately to get a decent quote on a Mitsubishi Evolution IX.

I was insured on an Evolution V when I was 25 and was paying €1400 (approx)
    and that was with Quinn

I have mentioned before on here that Quinn will no longer quote me on these types of cars.

I'm 27 now and have no claims or points and am expecting to be paying the same or less for insurance.

Can you please quote what car you are driving, what age you are, how much your insurance is and who are you insured with.

I'm finally in a position to buy one but cant get a decent quote.
Everyone is quoting around €1800  which is ridiculous

    Also:
I have been without a car now since November 2009. Previous to which I had 4 years NCB.
I have been a named driver on my Girlfriends car all this time.
Am I at risk of losing my NCB?

    Cheers
    G.

Cheapest I could find last summer for a 2.5l 190bhp petrol was €1,400.

25, 2 years NCB, driving license 2 years.

Looking around at the moment, 26, 3 years NCB, still can't get much lower.

Insurance prices seem to have hiked up hugely in our bracket(25-32 right?)

18 months ago I could get fully comp on an e39 M5 for €1,466 :/

It was probably the age (32) but I was paying 527 full comp through RSA for the 260bhp Mazda 6 MPS.

Its the car. You could get cheaper insurance on similar BHP Audi's or BMWs and the like.

Out of curiosity and not my intention to drag thread off topic either but would you mind telling me the broker you went through for RSA insurance. To cut a long story short I renewed my insurance this year with RSA insurance through a broker in Tralee. I'm very very satisfied with the premium and level of cover but not so with the broker (mentioning no names). They misplaced my NCB, only sent me my insurance policy a few days after it commenced even though I had sent in draft and NCB over two weeks before commencement date of policy and after me getting on the blower to them 2 or 3 times....not good enough in my opinion. I believe RSA only quote through brokers, hence it might be useful to me to have the name of another broker come renewal time next year.

I was quoted something like €824 fully comp on an Alfa GT 3.2 V6. (240 bhp). This was with 123.ie.

I was quoted 1.1k for 740 4.4 v8 which is alot of ponies when I was 23 2 ncb. Gtv would not be considered as performamce car. More of hairdressers jewellery. Even if IRS 240 hp.

123.ie are interesting breed. One day they don't insure sports cars, ather day they don't insure jap cars. Then they insure jap car but not performamce cars. Then ather way around. Then they don't insure anything again. It's like when you calling to them you talk with new company every single time

I got a quote for €1100 on a 328ci e46 bmw there from aviva. Didn't shop around, but judging by some of the comments in this thread I probably will. I'm 24 with 7 years NCB as a named driver and no penalty points.

From what I know, NCB as a named driver doesn't count with a lot of insurance companies. You need to have NCB in your own name.

    Hi All

Just a quick update on this,

So basically I rang nearly every insurance broker/company in the golden pages

No one bar XS Direct will quote me, and the quote is €1780.00 (Upfront) with a €4000 Excess :(

My only option now is to buy a banger and then "switch over" the insurance to an Evo IX after the cool down period (which is different for each company)

    This is a pain.
I think its ridiculous that if I want this car that I have to do this.

Also discovered over the weekend, that to rent an additional parking spot in the Apartment complex I am in, will cost €80 per month!!!!:mad::mad:

Think I'm going to have to leave it.
    shame really...

The broker was McSharry Foley :)

Wouldnt they totally ream you $$ wise if you did that? That sounds like a much worse plan than paying more upfront.

Btw, Im 30 (with 5years NCB, not counting any named) and paying EUR1100 on an Audi S8 (340bhp) and EUR400 on an 850CSi (380bhp) both arranged via First Ireland broker who use Chartis.

A good motor broker is the best bet.

The online and direct sales channels aren't able for non standard risks.

evo's pretty much impossible to insure . i have an Evo III insured TPFT with little change out of €1800 with FBD, 29, 6years NCB, no points etc. only reason they give me a quote was i had house insurance and existing commercial policy already with them.
its has become a very very expensive hobby

Am I at risk of losing my NCB?
YES! I think you lose it after 2 years. Be careful.

30yrs old; full licence, 8 yrs no claim, no points, Dublin. www.123.ie I got a quote of €860 fully comp for my 4.3L 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage. €790 with my father named.

It's not your criteria per se, but the specific car they have issue with. Keep ringing around. The internet wont do for this class of car. I mean ring literally everyone!

Not necessarily. Many companies (Aviva for definite) recognise named driver experience as well as own-policy. When we went to a 2-car family a few years back I got credited with 5 years NCB for being named on my then-girlfriends (now wife's) policy. After only 3 years in my own name I'd full NCB :) We're now back to 1-vehicle, but I'm confident enough that when the time comes they'll recognise my wife's being named on my policy for the last number of years.

    .

Yeah 2 years any your NCB is invalid with nearly everybody.

When i worked doing the insurance thing Named driver experience worked like this:

if your NDE was on an Aviva policy Aviva would grant up to 3 years NCB but if your NDE came from somewhere else they would only gave you a 1yr 10% NCB. Most of the companies i dealt with worked that way.

Your earned ncb in own name good for 2yrs from cancelation, the n-drvr experience since is not always accepted when appplying for performance car - Changing mid-year from small car to sports car is probably no cheaper as the insurance company will know it gonna happen if they've declined you prior to setting up a poicy.

Make and Model will determine if the will quote you - All cars are in groups from 1-50. Jap Imports like Evo's & RS200 are higher grouped as you know they dont come without mods , were if you look to insure an Audi A4 Quatttro or Focus ST come with factory standards and dont need after-market DIY jobs - there is better chance of reasonable quote.
