    Hi,
Plans to photograph the moon, anyone? It seems that there will shortly be a rare opportunity to catch a "Super Moon."

From NASA: March 16, 2011: Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years.

"The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1983," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look."

    Nasa link here

    Cheers,
    Pa.

It has been a lot bigger already since last night, even tonight would be a good night I'm sure.

Does anyone know about what time tomorrow this will be? It would be nice to get to someplace high and away from lights and plan some shots. :)

was lovely and clear out earlier, with fluffy clouds here and there, my camera/lens/dunno! wont take nice photos of the moon tho.

    any tips?

You probably need to set your exposure manually.. since the automatic system is going to try & make the moon a neutral grey and overexpose it like mad.
You probably also need to have a tripod to keep things steady.. couldn't hurt to bracket your exposures either

Fast shutter speeds needed. I found that out any time o tried to shoot the moon. Unless you want a further back shot and include the clouds. For zoomed shots, looking for a nice 3d orb capture, 1/200 or so with a narrow aperture, tripod and remote if you got em.

Last night was 1/125th f8 for a nice exposure of the moon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,756 ✭✭✭Thecageyone

Yup, had a go myself with my old manual zoom, longer lens I have. I was getting good clear results between 1/125 - 1-200 at f/11. I has iso set to 500, reducing that would have given similar settings to what you suggest but it was freezing so I didn't try for long. Will have a better go tonight if it's as clear.

Major cloud and rain in Kerry. No chance of seeing it never mind standing out there taking a picture!

It was crystal clear up here last night in Navan. Not looking so good this evening though. Blanket of dead grey cloud all over.

Lashing in Galway. Last night I crashed very early, and I could see a ridiculously bright moon through the shades and I thought "No, I'm not getting up to take photos of the moon, I'll do it tomorrow!"

    :(

    EDIT:
    http://www.met.ie/latest/rainfall_radar.asp?ani=y
    We're doomed.

Sunset is about 18:35, moon rises in the east shortly after that. I think the sweet spot will be about 19:30-20:00, skies are getting dark, moon still fairly low. All of this assuming its not overcast. Looking at the rainfall radar I think there is a chance it might clear the west of Ireland by then. Dublin is fooked though.

That is bang on. t's just gone 6 and the rain has begun to fall here in Navan.

Raining here all afternoon too, so no moon shot here either! Maybe tomoro? Its not likley to disappear that quick - a moon that size. Im sorry I didn't go out last nite either, was so tired after coming home late......

They say from tomoro on weather supposed to be better - just have to wait and see for ourselves.

Zero chance here in Waterford tonight anyway, in fact looks pitch black like there's no moon (am in middle of nowhere so no light pollution). Not too pushed myself as my only long lens is the kit lens, and it's not that great zoomed in tbh... but please people post your pics it's nice to see them !
    Great shot Goods.

    or an airplane :).
I do like these shots though... well, the ones that don't look too much like a 90s market t-shirt print. (husky dog optional)
(or maybe that was just France in the 90s?)

I tried to take a few pictures on the Friday, since I had plans on Saturday, which weren't compatable with photography.

Anyway, on one of the shots, if you look at the Raw version, you can clearly see 3 dots to the left of the moon. Very strange & only in that single shot.
Here's the pic and an overexposed crop to highlight the 3 dots.
