Stiff handlebars

    Hi,

Hope someone can enlighten me to how I messed up my handlebars please....

I have a hybrid bike and yesterday I went to fit a new adjustable handlebar stem. Looked like a very straightforward thing to do...I removed the old stem and replaced with the new, the problem now is that the handlebars are very stiff, they don't move from side to side freely.

The only thing I adjusted that I can think of is the bolt that fits vertically down into the bike tube (sorry I don't know the names for these parts, bike n00b). I am fairly sure that it was very tight when I opend it and don't think I am overtightening it. Anyway, does anyone know what I messed up or need to adjust?

    Thanks

Sounds like you may have overtightened the headset. Have a look at this video for guidance on how headset adjustment should be done, and see if redoing it according to the guidelines there improves it any bit.

Yes, as cython said, you tightened that bolt down too much. It is only supposed to be tightened down enough to stop any looseness, but still allow the wheel to pivot easily.
