I looked for a threads on this race, but didn't see one, so:

I got this code for 10% off enteries up to Sun 20th March: R7171G550815 Entry cost before discount:€54 (€60 from 12th June).

    Distance: Try-a-tri, Sprint or Olympic.

I'm thinking of doing the Standard Distance this year.

Have just entered this. Better half has also entered the Tri-a-tri as her first so it shopuld be a good day out. Pity its so damn expensive. 54 + fee + then cc charge! Pit no other race suits my schedule as i feel done!

So many others here get done? Or any others thinking fo doing it. Entry closes tomorrow at midnight. Presumably just at that price point but i entered today just to be sure

This year tri athlone entry is €54 for all events. I've entered for Olympic and I think €54 is ok, but for try-a-tri it looks OTT.

Wish they'd take a leaf from North Tipp Sprint's book! Still looking forward to it though. run route is decent, not easy in the slightest and generally has decent support.

I would love to do the OLY distance to get another tri under my belt before the IM but i think it could be to close to race day. I would feel hard done paying that price for try a tri but for the OLY distance it seems ok.

Me thinking of it also. Would like to get a fast oly under my belt.
    Are there many wave starts?
What is the course generally like? I know the run is 4 laps of the streets, but if its anything like Tri Athy 2 years back I may have second thoughts on this

Run is good. Its through town and has some lumpy tough climbs. Certaintly not a run pb course. Cycle is flattish though and. 1st half is slightly uphill with some gradual climbs which make for a fast 2nd half and swim is fine, you can almost follow the flow of the under water vegetation, good visibility.

Well thats based on it being the same as the Euro AGs last year which i believe it is (bar the swim).

Here's my splits from last yr (HRM was spiking, i dont have a max of 238!!)

    Run - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/39325077

I just entered the sprint event in Athlone - before the 10th Jun deadline.

It is my first "proper" triathlon after doing the Achill Roar event last Sept. The swim is my biggest worry. There is talk that the swim was ALL down stream in some years but the route plan this year is a loop with some upstream. Maybe this was an "on the weekend" decision due to heay rain/fast flowing river - anyone know?

Your correct, this is something that they will deceide on the weekend.
The route plan has always beend a loop, last year it was but the previous
2 years it was all downstream due to bad weather in the week leading up to the race resulting ion a very fast current in the river. Whatever it is, just try and enjoy it, dont panic, go at yourr own pace and you will get through it.

I really enjoy this race, especially the run, there is an amazing athmosphere around the town.

    Best of luck

Will triAthlone be more geared towards elites and pros or will ya find ur average joe racing there as well?

It looks like a fairly wel publicized event that will be covered intensively by the media, both home and abroad it seems.

Im already signed up for the sprint but just hope I dont find myself on the start line with a camera in my face and people going who the hell is this guy? haha

It said on my email payment receipt "representing ireland' .... I taught , jesus that sounds like something they would say in the olympics...

Im prob just being silly here????

Can anyone shine some light on this for me?

It's the national sprint championships so will have a strong field, however yes there's all different abilities present just a stronger elite field.

I'm a typical age grouper and in for the sprint too, average top 10-15% of Normal races but that could be way out in Athlone.

With near 2,500 entries it sounds a good one so can't wait.

Closed roads and a big event so thumbs up from me.

Let's hope the weather gods agree!

You'll have loads of average joes.... with a field that size you'll get all abilities.

I've done it several times before and trust me - there is no reason to be intimidated. You'll get some very fast and some very slow and everything in between. Enjoy!

+1 to what the lads said.

    There's a thread here aleady: www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056212234

Maybe a mod could merge this with it?

hmmm.. I just entered for the sprint there now. Have a receipt and all, but on looking at the race listing, myself and about 4 others are just plonked in the listing with no race numbers.

I do hope its all good to go!

The swim has been moved to all downstream apparently. Good news for weak swimmers like me!

*ANNOUNCEMENT* due to the flow of the water Waterways Ireland triAthlone have to use the alternative swim!!!

sprint is now completely downstream and the olympic is downstream and a small bit upstream - will make for fast swim times :)

not the last two years anyway...

In 2007 the swim was all upstream from just above the weir.
In 2008 the swim was downstream for first 350 metres then upstream
In 2009, the plan was to be as in 2008 but they changed it at the last minute and fell down by not letting people know in time.
In 2010, the swim was back to the 2008 course. The European Championship for the professionals was 2 laps of the sprint course. Not sure about the agegroupers.

There's been a lot of rain in the past fortnight and the currents must be affected. At least they've given everyone proper notice and a chance to prepare.

Personally I'm delighted because I was getting worried about the swim.

    Swim:

Cons - the long aul walk from the gathering point to the actual point where you entered the water.

The long ass haul up the hill into transition (possibly no longer than most, but it just seemed longer :p)

Pros - Water was grand and clear, exit pontoon was great.

    Cycle:

Cons - Can think of any..

Pros - nice flat track, well marshalled, good support etc.

    Run:

Pros - Nice to run through the town, fairly well laid out course.

Cons - Despite all the shouting from the marshalls, you couldn't stop the public from walking/crawling across the road infront of you.

Several people seemed a bit disoriented re: the 2.5/4.5 lap instruction.

    Overall, very enjoyable tbh.

Very warm too - pity they ran out of water near the end.. but made up for it by picking up 75% full ones from the road and passing them out :pac:

Really well organised event as usual. Great athmosphere around town
and on the run, which i thought was longer that 5k, but maybe that was just the heat.

Swim was nice but i was expecting a stronger current as the route had changed but didnt think it was strong at all.

The timing system and website they used is great, results and splits straight away.
