I graduated in 2008, got BTEA the whole way through. Was on the dole in the summer between 1st and 2nd year and worked in the summer between 2nd and 3rd year. So unless it has changed since then you should be fine.

If you mean coming off the dole to work full time in the summer immediately prior to your first year then I doubt you'd be in luck. But I'm not certain.

Then I would hazard a guess that if you left the welfare system to go into full time employment you'd lose all your entitlements. You're allowed to work part time while on BTEA so maybe if you held off until September and then start work while you're in college.

Rules

To qualify for the Back to Education Allowance, you must be at least 21 years of age (24 years of age for a third-level postgraduate course). For exceptions to the age limit - see below.

If you wish to attend a second level course you must be getting one of the social welfare payments listed below for at least 3 months (78 days of unemployment*) immediately before you start the course.

If you wish to attend a third level course you must be getting one of the social welfare payments listed below for 9 months (234 days of unemployment*) immediately before you start the course.

*If you are getting a jobseeker's payment, each day you are unemployed, except Sunday, is counted as a day of unemployment...

Your BTEA stops for the summer months, so yes you would have to go back on to the unemployment assistant.

Yes, you can work full-time during the summer months between academic years of your approved course and then resume BTEA when your course recommences. If you do not find work, you can apply for switch back to JSB/JSA.

In certain instances, the Back to Education Allowance is payable for the duration of the academic year only. The allowance is NOT payable for the summer period between academic years to BTEA participants who were in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance or Jobseekers Benefit prior to participation in the scheme...

Where BTEA participants (Second or Third Level Option) are unable to find employment during the summer period, subject to satisfying the usual qualifying conditions, they may be entitled to claim an unemployment payment (JA/JB).

I'm coming to the end of second year and am in receipt of BTEA, I have to go on unpaid work experience from May 11 to Jan 12 and wonder can anyone tell me if the BTEA will be paid during the summer seeing as the work experience is part of the course?

I vaguely remember reading something that said similar, can anyone clarify it for me? I was switched back to Job-seekers during last summer and signed on once a month, I won't be able to sign on once a month in the coming summer due to the job.

The BTEA is only paid for the 9 month academic year. According to the Departments guidelines it is NOT payable for the 3 month summer period between the academic years.

From the BTEA guidelines on www.welfare.ie:

3.3 Duration of Payment
In certain instances, the Back to Education Allowance is payable for the duration of the academic year only. The allowance is NOT payable for the summer period between academic years to BTEA participants who were in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance or Jobseekers Benefit prior to participation in the scheme.

Persons who were in receipt of One-Parent Family Payment, Deserted Wife's Allowance, Deserted Wife's Benefit, Widow's/Widower's Non-Contributory Pension, Widow's/Widower's Contributory Pension, Prisoner's Wife's Allowance, Disability Allowance, Blind Pension, Invalidity Pension, Incapacity Supplement, Carer's Allowance or Illness Benefit prior to participation in the scheme are not affected by this condition and retain payment during the summer period.

Where BTEA participants (Second or Third Level Option) are unable to find employment during the summer period, subject to satisfying the usual qualifying conditions, they may be entitled to claim an unemployment payment (JA/JB).

In circumstances where BTEA participants have to, as an integral or compulsory part of their course of study, undertake a period of work placement/experience, the allowance will continue in payment for this period. The participant must supply written evidence from the Registrars Office/Admissions Office or Student Records Office of the school/college/institution confirming this.
