I've read a few of the links and bits and pieces on mheg5, but I'm still at a loss as to whether my Edision mini combo handles it right. I get an epg of sorts and I can see now and next and the schedule for the week.

But there's no teletext on network2/rté2 now.

pages load up in less than a second on Aertel on rté1

are there any thorough descriptions of what "digital" teletext is compared to the digital teletext we currently would get on ATT or does anyone know if an edision mini combo does the mheg5 thing right?

I'm not an expert by any means but im almost positive your box is not compatible - very few set top boxes are, and only one combo box(and it has apparently vanished from the market for having faults)

its different but provides mostly the same type of info, albeit slightly more interactive -

Sic semper tyrannis - thus always to Tyrants

The reason RTE2 has no Aertel for you is that only MHEG-5 is being broadcast on that channel at the moment, RTE1 has both MHEG-5 and teletext versions.

MHEG-5 might be used for other things in the future, eg a standardised EPG, or interactive competitions, or alternative video streams.

The EPG you're receiving at the moment has nothing to do with MHEG-5, and should hopefully remain indefinitely.

The MHEG-5 Aertel is easier to read and navigate, and the current channel video remains visible in the top right corner.

The Edision mini combo does not do MHEG5. Apart from the Saorview certified boxes the only other commonly available boxes here that do MHEG5 are the "Freeview HD" boxes (not "Freeview" or "Freeview+").

Screen shot here http://www.saortv.info/about/mheg5/ of Windows 7 Media Center doing MHEG5 via a cheap USB DTT stick. It looks just the same on a Compatible TV (We have LG 42LD450 HDTV and it works perfect) or a compatible Set-box driving any TV or Video Monitor.

Unlike traditional EBU Teletext, the Text on MHEG is an application that can be changed. They can even possibly have a menu option to have smaller text on Bigger HDTVs, or full screen text on small TVs. Anything can be changed later.
