The eighth commandment?

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. What does this mean? Does it mean you don't say bad things about people which are not true? If this is the case then why do so many practising Christians in Ireland spread rumours and lies about people? Even better, why do so many people believe rumours and lies about others? Surely this has to be the commandment which is least obeyed by Irish people? Any explanations?

It's called sin. People do it.

How many people do you know who live like that?

We do the Gospel no favours by our lousy witness. I know. I'm a lousy witness, trying to clean up my act, with the grace of God!

    OP.
You are assuming that Christians claim to not sin?
I sin every single day, I know that much.

It means not to accuse someone in the wrong.

    Everyone sins.

In my opinion it is the third least obeyed commandment. I think the coveting of the wife and neighbours goods are probably far far more broken as they are 'passive' sins. They just happen, where as for 'false witnessing' it requires deliberate action on the perpetrators part. The difference is premeditation either consciously or sub-consciously. Just my opinion.

I would agree with the gist of this post. But I don't tend to rank sins by frequency so I dunno if I agree with that.

That is a bit of a stupid question.

There is a speed limit in Ireland, so obviously no one in Ireland ever speeds, right? :pac:

No it's not. Anyone who lives in a small Irish town knows that people love to start gossip and false rumours about their neighbours. Everyone does it. Yet these same people are at mass every Sunday. All I'm asking is why do Irish christians take so much pleasure in slandering and defaming others when they are taught by their church not to?

It has already been said that people sin. Hypocrisy is one example of sin. I don't know if it can be reduced to a simpler statement.

Why would you think they wouldn't? They are human, human's gossip and lie. That is why the 8th commandment exists in the first place. If they didn't what would be the purpose of telling them not to? If they didn't do it then telling them not to would be redundant, especially making it a commandment.

    Yes:
    1. No Christian is perfect, so sometimes evil-speaking occurs.

    2. Many people who name themselves Christian are not.

    **********************************************************
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
