Would anyone have any idea about how you go about becoming a customs officer? Are there courses? I have looked on the website of the customs and excise but I could only find email addresses about sending information on drugs and stuff.

So how would you go about training for this?

Most custom officers are internal appointments usually from within Revenue.

Most come from people already working in Revenue. But people can apply from other government departments also. However you have to be working in the civil service to apply.

I worked in customs as a temp for a while a few years ago as a temporary clerical officer. Most of the people i worked with there came from Revenue positions before they became customs officers.

Pretty hard to get into now the way things are. First you have to get a civil service job, then ( someone can correct me if im wrong on this) wait 3 years in whatever department your placed in, which you dont have a choice on. Then apply to show your interest in moving to customs or wait for an internal recruitment for customs officers.

Its a tough job too, when i was there a dozen new customs officer started and after the first month 4 of them requested to be returned to there old departments.

As far as I know there is also a medical to be completed. It is a very tough job. I know one girl who was fortunate to get it from Revenue she is based on one of the boats and isnt the greatest for your social life either.
