You have to buy the more expensive 3G version, and pay for a data plan from a mobile phone provider.

You'll get a sim card which is then installed in the iPad.

Someone mentioned an adapter that could be used, is there such a thing?

If you are using Windows 7, you shouldn't have to much trouble getting this to work.
Use a high quality USB WiFi adapter to plug your iPad to the laptop.
Now create a WiFi network that iPad will be able to join. There should be wizards that will allow the creation of a ad-hoc.Then these should be able to share the same connection.

Another option would be to use the the mobile device to supply the internet as a modem by USB or Bluetooth.

*Please be aware that you might have to set up through a WEP security rather than the basic settings for wireless in Windows. There might also be some issues with the Firewall. If that is the case, you might have to enabled internet connection sharing.

the option above is dependant on you haveing a computer with wired broadband in yout house.

if you're investin in an ipad and have no home broadband you will need to and the 3g version and go to vodafone/o2/ and get a micro sim pack and a data package.

    See here:

another option would be to purchase one of these:

    http://www.three.ie/products_services/broadband/mifi.html
    http://www.o2online.ie/o2/shop/broadband/detail.php?pid=80

its a portable wifi hotspot you can connect multiple devices up to while you're on the road/home or anywhere

Or you can buy an wifi only, and then use some app like MyWi Mobile Hotspot App to turn the wifi to 3G, read this: Tips to Turn iPad Wi-Fi Into 3G

Forget using the iPad for 3G especially in the countryside. The €500 you'll spend on it would be better spent on getting a broadband connection and a cheap laptop. You just won't get the value out of it i.e. €500 iPad plus maybe €20+ per month on 3G bills. 3G is an expensive route to browse the web. I use it but only for mails etc on the move. Its not a viable means to deliver broadband especially if your looking at YouTube, FaceBook and other data intensive applications.

I got a vodafone wifi tiny box. It's super. The iPad picks it up and away we go. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
