    Hi all,

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it under the search.

TomTom has a great looking new live traffic service that (semingly) includes full Irish info...

    http://www.tomtom.com/livetraffic

Handy for last minute route planning or those with mobile data devices.

Nice work TomTom, from a Garmin owner!

Interesting ... does anyone know where they get this information from? I know Dublin City Council supply data that can be used on Garmins via TMC, but what about other areas.

It is sourced from various tracking devices from a number of different company fleets as well as other individual devices.
Working very well at the moment. Live is much more up to date compared to TMC.

That's a bit vague on the details .. what kind of 'various tracking devices' and 'individual devices'?

Not sure on the list of companies they have deals with.
lots of large freight and transport companies, as well as some government agency's would have GPS tracking in all vehicles. This data is passed on and processed to provide traffic info.

When HD Traffic started a few years ago they were gathering data from GSM providers - it was observed how mobile phones and other TT Live devices were switching between the GSM towers.

I appreciate that this is an older thread, but I just noticed the other week that live traffic data is also available in the Dublin area through Nokia Maps on my phone. Nokia own Navteq, so I presume that the info would be availalable on Garmin's also, but I have yet to test this on an old Nuvi 660 which may require an update.

It's being transmitted over the internet via Nokia however, as my phone wouldn't have been picking up FM transmission without an ariel attached.

I wonder where all the info is sourced from, as the resolution seemed excellent.

Have a tomtom (not Live) built into Renault or Renault built around the TT anyway TMC doesnt work on it. I follwed it up with TT UK and they said it was Renault Ireland (bcmg?) doesnt have a licence for it.

Despite ringing and emailing bcmg asking them about getting a licence I have heard nothing back.

You will not get TMC Traffic on any TT device here.
Nothing to do with Renault AFAIK.

TT support told me it was a licencing issue as it works in NI.
Pity really cause its a nice feature

TT has no licence form Trafficnav, the provider of TMC in Ireland.
TT has to apply for the licence.

Which I don't see happening as they have their own live services.

HD traffic is only for connected devices. They do not have any service for "old school" devices with RDS-TMC receiver.

    That's correct ..

so to aks a question to summerise

Does it work. I have the Tom Tom West Europe on iphone would be very interested in getting this .

It works if your device is "live" enabled. Which I'm not sure of for the iPhone. I presume it would be.

And its not 100% up to date but generally very good. Alerts to traffic as well as road work areas.

I didn't believe it when I got it first and got stuck by ignoring it. I listen to my sat nav lady now!

in Enniskerry today and noticed that the traffic info had downloaded to the device. Did nothing to it. It lost the info on the way back to city centre but retuned manually to 88.5 and it got the up to date info.

When I arrived home I turned off the car and turned back on to check it was still working but it wasnt....cant figure it out maybe the broadcast was unencrypted for that period???

I'm normally using a live device myself, so I probably wouldn't notice anything.
I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else experienced this.
