Volvo S40 1.6 Diesel - Problem

I have an 07 model with 105,000 Km on the clock. Always serviced at the required intervals by a Volvo main dealer. Car has been trouble free until now (apart from an ABS problem - fixed a few months ago.

About 90% of the time, the car is seriously down on power. Just home from driving from Cork to Portarlington and back again. In 5th gear, I could not get the car to go past 110 km/h - corresponding to 2,200 rpm. In fourth gear, the car would not go past 105 km/h - corresponding to 2,800 rpm. All this on the motorway.

No warning lights, no messages appearing to indicate a problem. Engine noise is normal. No visible exhaust fumes.

I deliberately drove for about 1 hour on each leg of the trip in 4th gear, in case the DPF needed to be burned off.

Odd thing though: the car was parked in Portarlington for about 30 minutes and I then did some driving around the town area - and the car functioned normally. On the trip back to Cork, I stopped in Ballincollig for about 10 minutes - and the car drove perfectly for the remaining 6 miles home.

    Any ideas or theories ?

You really need to get fault codes read before you know where the problem lies..
I'd be looking at boost pressure solenoid...vac pipes leaking vac...etc.

The air intake pipe on the ford/citroen 1.6D is prone to splitting leading to drawing in too much air when the engine is under load.

If you remove the engine cover you will see the pipe to check it..

In addition to what the others have said, inspect all of the intake pipework for leaks. These will usually be given away by oil stains on the pipe, particularly at joins. In addition to the spot mentioned by NissanDoc, check where the hose comes out of the intercooler, and where it enters the throttle body just above the alternator.

Another problem with this engine is contamination of the MAF with oil. I don't know if this applies to Volvo, but early Ford models had the intake hose modified, and a software update on the ECU to modify EGR operation. These were to prevent conditions arising where oil could be blown back out of the intake and on to the MAF.

Thanks for all your replies. Brought the car to the Volvo dealer this morning. You were right - it was a damaged air pipe. The DPF sensor was faulty as well. €445 and I am on my way again.

I also found out that Volvo recommend that the DPF is changed at 120,000 km - that costs about €1,000. But most people drive on until it packs up.

It would put you off buying diesels.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice - you were spot on.

Hi lads, i have a 05 S40 SE 1.6 Diesel, 225K km and it is drinking fuel, if i go to dublin and back which is a roundtrip of approx 280 km, it uses half or more of a tank, this surely cant be right? i dont go above 120km on the motorway and i adhere to speed limits everywhere. But no matter what journey im doing it drinks fuel, i called volvo dealer the other day, and they said they will have to run a diagnostics check on it, that its rare for one of these cars to be hard on fuel, that it could be the fuel injectors, has anyone any experience of this problem? and is it costly to get diagnostics check and injector prob fixed?
I usually go to an Indy mechanic, have had the car 2 yrs, and its never done more than 650 km to a full tank, turbo went in it last yr, intercooler pipe split this yr had to be replaced, soon after buying it i had to get it repaired at volvo dealers paid for by volvo as it was a recall, and had an electronics problem, which would have cost me over E1000 otherwise,
any help would be great cheers!

Did you have the dpf replaced/cleaned....??..if not your engine ecu maybe calling it to regenerate every 100km or less...if this is the case then it will make it harder on diesel.
