Detergent in clothes

Hello , having a problem with washing clothes both at home and in launderette and then being unable to get the smell of washing powder or liquid detergent out of them. I had my clothes cleaned in a launderette and I put them on the line for a while and then put them on rads for the evening. They're not as bad as when I was washing them at home in the washing machine\dryer combi as there was a whiff of mildew and mould when I did this. I work in an office so the smell of the washing detergent is causing mass sniffing and sneezing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

By any chance are you using those 'small and mighty' liquid detergents? They cause this, and can actually make your washing machine mouldy if you use them long-term. It happened to me and to others, there have been threads about it before.
If so, switching back to a powder will fix the problem immediately.

No , I switched from using Ecover powder & tablets to the liquid. The same thing happened when I used washing powder that they gave me in the launderette. Maybe I'm not rinsing them properly or leaving them in the machine for too long after they're done.

Maybe you are using too much detergent, considering machines in the past number of years use less water than older machines.

Also, with regards the mouldy smell, a "maintenance wash" should sort it.

http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/cleaning-help/cleaning-maintenance/2657-smelly-washing-machines.html is a handy link. It even specifically mentions liquid detergent as a cause for smelly machines.

+ 1 on maybe using too much detergent. If it's not rinsing out properly it'll cause that type of smell.

I think you're probably right. I was doing an overkill on the detergent ( 3 cap fulls ) , to the extent that it was actually being absorbed through my socks into my feet and the smell was coming out through my bloody hands , believe it or not.

Eww, you're lucky it didin't irritate your skin. In my experience, unless you're washing muddy clothes it's best to use slightly less than the amount of detergent recommended on the pack. And if the machine's only half full, then halve that amount.
