The wife has a 00 golf TDI.As usual she leaves the diesel run out before it would occur to her to put more in.

So last nite it wouldnt start after i put about 4 litres into it from a jerrycan.Tried again this morn and no luck.

Does anyone know if im missing something or will it have to go to mechanic?

It's airlocked, it may have a priming bulb by the fuel filter or it may be self priming.

Is that something i could sort myself?

Well if there is a priming bulb you just open a bleed screw and pump the bulb until diesel comes out of the screw, then tighten the screw and she should start.

If it's self priming you just keep cranking until all the air is gone, may well drain the battery though.

Your fuel pump and lines to the injectors are no doubt full of air though so it may well need more to get it going than cranking.

yip, just keep cranking till she starts - giving it some pedal at the same time.

Have you homestart with the AA:) Take off the outer shell for fuel filter maybe put some diesel in there that might help. Lash in some more diesel in fuel tank also. Unfortunately when you let them run dry you run the risk of sucking up any dirt and crap thats in the bottom of your fuel tank

You wont have any manual way to prime the system on these.
Remove the r-clip from the top of the fuel filter, prise up the t-piece and fill the filter with clean diesel then refit.
If its the pd engine turn the ignition on for 5 seconds only lots of times like 10-20.
If it the older engine just keep cranking until it starts

Got it sorted, just took off one of the hoses going to fuel filter and kept turning her over until she started.Think it sorted the airlock.

Now i just need the wife to put diesel in the poor thing!!!:D:D
