I failed the nct ,there was a problem with the brakes ,one side wasnt balanced with the other. He mentioned floating ,brake pads .When I went to the garage they said the caliper was stuck and they reset it .
Will this do ? I havent a clue and he said Id have to get new caliper if it sticks again but how do I know when it sticks?

A floating brake means the piston pushes against the brake disc, which in turn pushes against the brake pad to slow down the car.

You'll know if your brakes are sticking if you can't stop braking, or if the car pulls to one side while driving!

If the caliper was seized badly enough to cause a pull on the steering then just resetting hasn't fixed it. It may unstick it briefly but hasn't fixed the problem which is likely to be corroded sliders or torn piston seal.

a number of the old Xj6 I had, would have a seized caliper, as Nissan Doctor said, it was always a torn piston seal. I would have to limp home slowly, the heat build up was always amazing. replacing the torn seal was a fairly easy job (though between the slippy oil and the rubber seal, I did lose one over the hedge ), and a replaced one never went again.

It used to surprise me no dirt was ever evident, a small rust stain would be visible, but it always wiped off leaving a perfect piston. it doesn't take much sometimes to seize a caliper.
