Athletics: What Irish records will tumble in 2011?

Seriously looking forward to the 2011 summer season culminating in the Worlds in Daegu. I have a feeling that a few senior records might go this year.
    • David Gillick from what I gather is rounding into great shape and could better his own 400m national record.
    • Tori Pena and Brian McGovern in the pole vault should break the women's and men's records respectively.
    • Women's relay teams have a great chance to improve their times in Daegu.
    • Perhaps Kelly Proper in long jump?
    • Robert Heffernan 50km walk. Any idea if he will race a 50km before Daegu?
    • Ailis McSweeney in 100m is a good bet to improve on her 11.40 PB.
    • Also it will be interesting to see how Fionnuala Britton's encouraging winter form will translate to the steeplchase on the track.
Does anyone see any other records under threat? Anyone brave enough to call Derval for yet another PB/NR? (maybe in Daegu)

    Slightly off topic.

How come Ray Flynn 1500m Irish Record is dated the same day as his mile record in the Dream Mile?

my understanding is that its possible to set more than 1 record in a race, so his time @ 1500m into the mile race was good enough for a record in that also....so 1 race, 2 records..

No sure if ya have to finish the longer race for a shorter race time to count...

So i guess in theory, an Marathoner could break about about a dozen records.
I'd like to see a marathon trying to keep up a pace of 1.40 for the 800m!

Thats the case alright. makes you wonder what time he'd have ran for 1,500m if he had been finishing then...

Don't know if he would have ran faster. It looks like that he ran quicker from 1400 to 1500m trying to keep up with Scott than what he ran for the last 100m.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,345 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

But he may have kept a bit back for that last 100m That'd be my thinking anyway

Either way, its time those records were beaten. By far our lengest standing Mens track record AFAIK

On paper Cragg should do a great marathon, but he's notorious for cracking when it counts. I'd go for Keneally in the marathon.

Hes an absolute flyer but it will be a big ask.
100 km 7:05:06 hrs Thomas Maguire 08/10/2006 World 100k Seoul, South Korea Thats the current record and its savage, hope he breaks it as hes a lovely fella:D

Kenneally is a good guy and a very good athlete, but he is not in Cragg's league. Two Olympic finals are not easy to get to you know? I would have thought they were high pressure situations.

At the moment could only see the Pole vault or maybe the 400m record going this year. Think a walk record already went this year?
Don't think cragg will break NR this year but if he got a sub 2:12 in the bag that would set him up for a nice 2012 :).

Can't see that happening ... yet.

Would love to see him and Hession racing over 100m at nationals this summer

Cragg has bettered the national half marathon record in New York. Hope this translates to a good debut marathon in Boston.

Brian McGovern set a new Irish pole vault record this weekend with a respectable 5.02m clearance. He is young so he should steadily improve over the near future.

Oh dear, would love to see her destroy the competition at European Juniors

Does she train with anyone? Or is it just her and her coach?

We had an Irish record last week. Ben Kiely broke the Irish Youths (U18) record for 400 hurdles in Cork. He ran 53.66 and took 4 seconds off his PB in the process. The old record was from 1986.

Crikey, that's a huge chunk to knock off. The timekeepers weren't from Guernsey were they :pac: (Sorry, a very limited audience joke.)

Are the U18 hurdles set at the senior height TF?

Hurdles are set at 2ft 9. Young Kiely is an interesting prospect. He has spent most of his time in the shadow of his twin sister. He plugged away winning the occasional medal at national level. Ironically he recorded this time which is inside the EYOF standard while she was away in Portugal as part of a training camp in preparation for the EYOF.

He beat Tim Crowe whilst setting this record (albeit over marginally shorter hurdles) so some scalp for the lad!

I wouldnt say im a devote follower of Athletics but i like to pop into threads like this from time to time.
It always makes me suspicious when a first time poster comes into threads like this and causes contreversy. Always seems to happen in these sorts of threads.
Back on topic its great to see a lot of young irish talent coming through.

Marcus Lawler equalled the Youth 200m record of 21.79 which is held by 3 lads; Lawler, Lorcan O'Caithan and Curtis Woods.

It's only May so I'm sure he can make that record his own this season

FAO the poster claiming to be Ciara's coach, could you please tell us when her first race is this year? is she likely to do any BMC's this year in the chase for fast times?

Tori Pena revises the Irish pole vault record yet again, 4.34m in California. She is edging closer to the B-standard for London and Daegu of 4.40m.

unfortunately the AAI and IOC have decided not to take any B standards to deagu and london

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

True, if she can achieve the B-standard first though she can then begin to set her sights on the 4.50m A-standard. I hope though that if Tori gets the B-standard we will send her as her progression this season has been steady and consistent. I have read the interview with Kevin Ankrom and yet, somehow, I don't think the door will be closed on those on a B-standard for Daegu this year and we may well see some athletes sent to the Worlds on this standard. The London Olympics however may be a different issue and the A-standard might well be insisted upon. But sure what do I know!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,029 ✭✭✭Pisco Sour

Ignoring B-Standard athletes completely is short-sighted and idiotic. If Ciara Mageean and Kelly Proper achieved B-Standards for example, should they be sent to Daegu? Abso-bloody-lutely!!

In my opinion, if you achieve a standard deemed good enough by the IAAF then you should be allowed compete, regardless of your stage in your career, but at the very least, young and up and coming athletes should be sent if they achieve B-Standards. After all, didn't Olive Loughnane's career kick off at the Sydney Olympics, with a 35th place finish, only qualifying on a B-Standard, gaining valuable experience in the process, and 9 years later going on to win silver in Berlin.

I think we'll see young athletes with potential who get the B standard sent to the worlds.

From his comments, Ankrom seems to be aiming to stop guys (rightly or wrongly) who are career qualifiers without ever progressing in championships. I think athletes like Magaeen, Pena, Smyth and the like will get sent.

The Olympics is a different story. The guidelines come down from the OCI and they have said associations cannot forward athletes with B standards for selection. It takes the decision out of the hands of the AAI.
