Cartrawler - car hire in Nice, France

Rented a car from Cartrawler (used by Argus, Axa etc) for collection and return to Nice Airport, France. (For the week it was working out about €30 less than Hertz so I tried Cartrawler for the first time) - received a rental voucher for "Dollar Car Rental" which turned out to be ADA Car Rental.

Arrived in Nice Airport and went to the Car Rental Location (having ignored some reference on my booking voucher to ring a number on arrival) to find that ADA had no presence in the airport anymore - just a lonely sign on its own in an empty carpark.

Rang the number - a French one - from my mobile and got through to an office who said "we will be at the 'kiss n fly' area in 5 minutes."

15 minutes later a guy arrives and puts our suitcase into the back so I'm reckoning he is going to do a wireless visa thing or something and let us drive off.

Nope - he tells us to get in saying "we'll go and do the paperwork".

He drives us to a local agency in Cagnes sur Mer about 5 miles away  (which was the complete opposite direction we wanted to go to from the airport) and about 20 minutes later we arrive and sit down and fill out the forms.

We get the car and ask what part of the airport we leave the car back at when returning at the end of the week.

"Oooohh no, you drive back to Cagnes sur Mer and ring my mobile (another roaming phone call) and we'll give you a lift back into the airport."

So that's what we had to do. Of course I'm paying the petrol for the extra (small) mileage and the extra half hour of my time bringing it further than my correct pickup and dropoff location of Nice Airport! But it was a Sunday so was ok - we would not have relished this journey on a workday...then I make a second phonecall to the guy to come to his office to meet us and take us to the airport.

Nice chaps in ADA Cagnes sur Mer though - and made for a bit of an different experience.

I'm used to driving around the South of France and am not going to make any official complaint to Car Trawler - and I found the whole episode more strange than anything - but on another day this could have been a right pain in the ass.

So if hiring in the South of France - I suggest you go with the usual suspects - Holiday Autos (broker) , Hertz, Europcar, etc that actually have a LOCATION in the airport! :)

p.s. the tank was about 3/4 full when getting it - so I had to be very careful when topping it back up to this exact level.

Bottom line - not worth the saving and, strictly, not within the terms of the rental agreement whatsoever given that we selected pick up and return locations as the airport.
