6 inch placings in the woods/hazard area

I understand clearly the situation of placings on the fairways and rough. But does this apply in the hazard area such as in the trees.

A playing partner hit a fairway shot into the wooded area and found his ball to be laying pretty much in front of a tree and therefore had no shot to the green. Next thing i know he hit a cracker onto the green and birdied it. He then tells me that he moved the ball 6 inches??? sideways behind the tree so he got a clear opening to the green.

Has he broken any rules hearing or was he within his right?? Not fussed about about it,he's a brutal player anyway. :):):)

If placing is in effect he's perfectly entitled to clean and place anywhere with the exception of a defined hazard.

i was of the belief that you are only allowed place your ball when it lies on actual grass i.e. fairway and the rough. Therefore this doesnt include any area around trees or in a defined hazard.

Lift, clean and place unless otherwise stated would include anywhere within the boundary of the course with the exception of a hazard

You can have "placing fairway only" or "placing everywhere", which means that you can place the ball anywhere on the course, with the exception of defined hazards, bunkers, water hazards etc. Problem is that the 6 inch rule is regularly abused

Depends on the wording for the club in question. My club is "Placing on fairways and cut rough only" so he would not have been allowed to place in the trees. If it was "Placing through the green" then he would have been entitled to place, as this covers everywhere except defined hazards.

typically we have placing on fairways and dropping in the rough.
As long as the ball first hits the ground within 6 inches and doesnt roll forward or more than 2 clublengths he was fine IMO.

My biggest problem with winter placing is thats lads wives and partners have obviously been lying to them for years about what 6 inches is
