    Hello All,

Have seen 1 or 2 members on here talking in past about timing belt services on MKV GTI's and costs etc. Car is 2006 with 40k miles.

What I am wondering does anyone know if water pump defo needs doing on first change? Talked to stealers today and they say may not be needed doing on first change as just belt and tensioners etc.

I am thinking I may just ask that it be done so as to rule it out as a risk (cost extra STG£50 on the day) and looking to get thoughts on this? Going to ask Southern garage tomorrow... maybe the NI one is just being honest!

I am pricing it down here in Dublin and also up in NI as I travel back and forth alot and might try save myself a few quid.

    Thanks for any help

    Paddy

Belts in the mark5 gti are not due for replacement until 70,000miles
VW claim it is ok to replace belt but to reuse waterpump and tensioner, for the extra 50 quid id replace the pump its not worth the chance

Hi Paddy, are you looking at VW dealers or independent garages? I'll have to look into this as well in the not too distant future and I'd be interested to know where you got the best deal, keep us posted.

    Thanks All,

AFAIK Interval is 4yrs/60k miles - whichever first; so I am splitting the difference as its 5 years now and 40k miles. Not taking a chance - will likely get water pump done too.

Pricing I have got so far from VW garage up in NI is £480 for full service and belt with tensioners. Water pump approx £45 on the day if needed.

Will call dealers down this way (Dublin) tomorrow. I had an extended warranty on it that expired this month so hence I am now looking at other dealers as it was just easier to have service done thru dealer I bought warranty etc from up to now.

Bloody expensive business these cars - between mine and wives Smax we have 2 x services due (Smax done), 2 x tax, 2 x insurance and 4 new tyres badly needed now on Smax - need VHI for cars! I am broke.

My listing says its due every 180k or 4 years. Either way its due if the car is 5 years old.

Its best practice to change any water pump that is driven by the timing belt when changing the belt as if the pump leaks you have to do the whole job again and the leaking coolant can contaminate the belt meaning the lot has to be replaced again.

You may want to go to a VW garage for a specific reason, but there is no reason the job should cost more then €350-€400, including pump, using OE quality parts. That the price range we use for most VAG belt driven engines.
