I bought the above car 30th dec 2009

first thing to go wrong is cd changer just stopped working (i'm not to bothered about this as i can still drive the car) this was mid jan 2011 - i didnt do anything about it and car was driving fine.

second thing in mid feb 2011 i nticed a warning light come on with anti pollution fault on display - brought it down to local mechanic - he did some diagnostic on it - light never came back on - so that was grand.

third thing - 2 days ago 2 warning lights came on - central stop warning light and engine oil pressure warning light - they say in manual to bring back to peugeot dealer asap - dont want to do this as they will rip u off - i checked oil level about 2 months ago was fine just topped up a little bit.

any ideas on the 3rd warning lights guys - i'm gettin really pi$$ed of at this stage. all help appreciated - oh and theres 63000km on the clock - i only put of 3,000 in the space of a year - do feck all driving.

if i can get these little things/or big things fixed - i wud sell the car tomorrow and get a vw golf.

    thanks guys:)

Bring your car to a dealer, get it checked over properly, spend a few hundred rather than spending thousands on trading up to a golf which isn't likely to be much better.
Cars need to be maintained, and I'm sure you had an idea what you were getting into when you bought a 307, their reputation for electrical maladies is well documented at this stage.

MAF sensor is usually the cause of the pollution message.

If you are getting an oil pressure warning light, and the oil level is correct, I personally would not drive the car at all. Have the car towed to your mechanic or checked wherever you parked it. If there is indeed an oil pressure fault, driving it can risk causing severe engine damage and even seizure.

So basically you had the car for 14 months Dec 2009 to Feb 2011 and the only thing to go wrong is the CD changer?

You checked the oil level 2 months ago?? Maybe you should check it now and see if the level is ok?

As the poster above says, get the car to a mechanic and let him look at it. It might just be low on oil. Or have a faulty oil pressure switch. I wouldn't drive it with an oil warning light on.

Yea you probably should buy a golf and see if its any more reliable, let us know how it goes.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I would have known about potential electrical issues with the peugeot prior to purchase - any car can give problems - it suited my budget at the time 5k - and low mileage 60km -
i'm going down to mechanic in the morning - nct is due in may as well - if i get it to pass that i may get rid of it.
i'll let you all know how i get on tmoro.
    thanks again

excuse my ignorance - but when u say engine seizure - does dat mean d engine is bunched and u need a new one.

Cd changer will have no bearing whatsoever on driving or anything mechanical, if that's what you mean.Is the radio working? Could be fuses maybe.I assume the second fault is still already fixed as you say.Third fault, first thing check the level now, 2 months ago is far too long. You need to check it every week. Seizure usually means the engine is F****d yeah.

    update

fault 1 radio works - dont care about cd player has no bearing on driving the car.

fault 2 air pollution warning light has not come back on.

fault 3 - oil pressure warning light and red stop warning light - brought it to a simi garage today well known - they do all servicing and diagnostics - mechanic hooked up computer - ran tests and could find no faults at all - he checked oil level and told me it was to high - so he drained excess oil - told me to come back friday and he can check it on another machine if light is still comming on - when i'm driving it now the lights only come on at low revs - when i come to slow down for example - when driving at normal speed no light comes on now - i'll check it again tmoro - mecanic reckons cud be a faulty switch which he said wud cost 40-50 to fix. he did tell me another guy had same car in last week same warning message low oil pressure - he needed new oil pump new water pum and new timin belt - cost him over 2k but he had a loud rattle noise commin from the engine - i dint have that.

any ideas guys - i'n really worried now - dont wanna have to put 2k into it - and i'm sick of hearin - never buy a pegeot!!!!!

    thanks for all the help.

any ideas guys on what else i can do on the oil pressure light

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭Slidey

    Is it a diesel?

If you didn't put any oil into it and the level is rising it may be 'washing out' the oil with diesel i.e. there is an internal diesel leak in the engine and it is entering the sump.

This could thin the oil and cause oil pressure to drop which will result in a knackered engine if you keep driving. You need to get a mechanic to do an actual oil pressure test on it. With an old fashioned oil pressure gauge.

any ideas guys on what else i can do on the oil pressure light

If a few engine flushes doesnt help then your going to have to replace the
    oil pump...try engine flush first..:)

It would be cheaper to fit a good secondhand engine....if its had this low oil pressure for awhile then it may have caused more damage within the engine.

Hi Ya sorry to hear of your car troubles its sooo fustrating! I am absolutley no expert but however I have a puegot 206 (petrol) its a 2003 car and was running perfectly until a few months ago the engine oil pressure light thingy kept coming on and the STOP light on the dash as well. I know you've probably checked on this but just to let you know for my car all it was was the coolant was leaking out of the little coolant tank as the mechanic hadnt properly tightened it back up when he was replacing the engine ( thats a whole other story had to replace engine due to not keeping on top of my car serviceing and the timing belt went as I drove it :o)
I know this mightnt help but no harm in checking before you spend a fortune. Good luck with it though gotta say I LOVE puegots!

considering my options but not gonna rush into anything just yet.

    Hi All

brought d peugeot to 2 different garages - 1st one said problem wud be fixed by new oil pump - 800euro.

2nd garage said - not to put any money into it and to get rid of it.
i'm getting 2 error messages now - oil pressure low and anti pollution fault.

what shud i do - shud i get the oil pump done - and 4 new tyres and hope it passes nct - i dont think it will cos d anti pollution fault will need to be fixed to. how do i just get rid of it? - it's driving fine - no one will buy private when they see the warning lights - i really dunno what to do - but 2nd mechanic said dont put any money into it - wastin ur time - he also said the head gasket can go on them alot as well.

i really need help/advice on this.

    thanks guys.

    Hi Jason,

I've just seen this thread and can fully sympathise with you! My wife has a 2004 307 1.4 petrol and we have had quite a number of serious issues over the last three years.

We also had the 'Insufficient Oil Pressure' message with the 'Stop' light and warning beeps while the engine was warm and at idle revs. This began just before Christmas and we were very worried about it although the engine sounded and operated just fine.

We brought the car to the (now out of business - serves them right!) Peugeot main dealer where we bought the and serviced the car and got them to have a look at it. The service manager told us that they put an oil pressure gauge on and confirmed that the oil pressure was lower than it should have been at tickover. We were then told that this meant the top half of the engine would be destroyed and it would be €3500 to sort out. What complete and utter crap! I think we were being given a load of baloney to persuade us to talk to the sales guy about buying a new car.

We decided to sit on it and see what happened. The snow at the time meant we couldn't get around to too many garages. Anyway, we drove the car as it was until last week and the messages and beeps continued but so too did the car!

Last week we brought the car to an independent mechanic. He verified the low oil pressure and replaced the oil pressure switch to eliminate that. The low oil pressure was still there. The car then given a full service and guess what - the oil pressure is now fine with no warnings since!!!

If you search the internet for things like:
    peugeot 307 oil pressure
307 low oil pressure at idle filter
you will see several mentions from people with this problem and the oil filter can be the cause of it.

If you still have the 307 and are still experiencing the insufficient oil pressure problem then change the oil and oil filter. It may solve the problem and is a lot more affordable than going in after the oil pump and oil pickup.

Unfortunately for me I have now got to scrape the money together to have the cylinder head gasket done.

I am stuck with this car for now but I look forward to the day when I can get rid of it off my drive way and out of my life. It's not bad to look at. It's roomy and safe as a family hatchback can be. However it suffers from poor build quality and extremely bad reliablilty and has become a huge money pit and drain. I will be buying a Mazda again next time!

    TM
