    Hi guys
My bike has 700 x 23c tyres on it and i want to change these to some sort of really tough tyres like continental gators or something but I am not sure what the story is with tyre size. Does this convert to something in inches as I had a look at chainreaction and they only seem to do inch sizes.

also i am wondering what the difference is between 23/25 does this mean they are wider tyres and can you put wider tyres on the same wheels? and is there a better size to get?

    Thanks a million :D

700x25's come as standard on a lot of entry level bikes, my Giant Defy came with them for example.

    I recently changed to 700x23's (Conti gp4000S's)

You could fit 25's if you felt he need but I'm pretty sure you can get gatorskins and the likes in 23's!

23mm is the width. You can get the gators in various widths. I'm currently running 25mm on my bike as they offer better grip & comfort than 23's.

    Gatorskins: 25C available...good all rounder.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tyre: 25C available. ....tough as old boots, apparently. More of a touring/commuting tyre.

I have these bad boys in the 700/25 size, I have only had one puncture and that was from a shard of glass that was like a razor and after going through the tyre and protective layer, the tyre only fizzed slowly.

There is a thinner version called the Durano plus if you want 23s http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=45443

My only note is that with the tougher tyre, you feel everything on the rougher roads. Around town it's fine and the difference is not really noticeable but if you head out for long spins, the parts where the top layer is taken off in patches on the road shake the living sh1t out of your my shoulders, some people call it a rougher ride and to be fair, my shoulders are not the toughest.

I suspect you're looking at the MTB tyres on chainreaction. They're sized in inches.

I'm running 700 x 25 gators and they've behaved very well all through the winter...

I think that's the added sidewall protection which makes the sidewall stiffer and therefore less compliant over rough surfaces. Race tyres tend not to have much sidewall protection.

I've never had a sidewall puncture on race tyres and I don't see the point in buying a nice bike them ruining it with crap tyres.

I never even thought of that but it would make sense. I just got fed up with the run of punctures I was having. I went through a stretch of 3 a day for a fortnight, had new tyres, different tyres, different bikes, different routes. It was driving me a bit mental. Had to call into CSS as I ran out of tubes as I came out from work and they had them reduced to 27.50 each and I thought, what the hell. The issue disappeared.

The "rough ride" it gives is most of the time not noticeable but there are patches in Wicklow where you feel it.

Also not as hard to get on as everyone told me. Takes a bit of effort but is quite manageable. They're not crap tyres, they're just suitable more for the quality of roads you get on the Continent.
