    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8380005/Child-3-treated-for-alcoholism-at-British-hospital.html

Nicolay Sorensen, a spokesman for Alcohol Concern, said: "To be diagnosed alcoholic, it's possible this child would have shown a physical dependency. They would have had to ingest enough to cause withdrawal symptoms.
Their research found four five-year-olds among 165 under-17s they treated in the past five years for drink and drug problems.

What the hell is the world coming to? Why would any parent give a 3 year old child alcohol, let alone enough to cause withdrawal symptoms??

Maybe they may have found alcohol the only solution to getting the child asleep or something ridiculous like that.

    Absolute madness.

Have heard of one mother who puts brandy on the babys bottle. The outside bit, soother is that the name? Helps them sleep

This is how these issues occur OP, I'd say it's pretty common but not something people report or talk about.

And Gripe water has pure alcohol in it afaik. Now banned in Ireland but sold up North

Are you actually suggesting that gripe water causes alcoholism?

    Of course not.
It's mothers who put spirits on babies bottles to get them to sleep that cause these issues.

Just gave the example of Gripe Water and how it might seem strange to use a product with alcohol on infants

I know where you're coming from....gripe water is used for colic in infants, but it only has like 3.5 % alcohol in it. The child would need to be knocking back a good few bottles of that a day to become addicted.

I have heard that whiskey and brandy were used to help babies with teething pain and to send them off to sleep back in the day, but I reckon you'd need to be giving a much larger amount than just a dip of a soother full for a child to become dependant on the stuff.

A drive down the motor way for a few minutes always knocked my kids out. Some people are just so bloody stupid, they don't deserve kids.
