    Hi.
I sent off my JSA application form after 1 yr on JSB; I should get it even thoough i have 16,000euro put away in savings.
My next decision is this: I have a chance to go to the states to work for the summer but I'm worried that I will lose my JSA when I come back in September. Will I?

You should'nt be getting any sort of social welfare payments if you have 16,000euro in savings, you are suppose to declare this when applying for benefits, so therefore you are committing fraud!!

    Shame on you!!

Bryano perhaps you should read up on Jobseekers Allowance payments before coming on here accusing people of committing fraud.

You can have savings while in receipt of this allowance - information here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/means_test_for_social_welfare_payments/means_test_for_jobseekers_allowance.html#l4570f

So you're saying that a person who was working and saving money should be discriminated, while a person who was earning similar amount of money and spending similar sum (16k in the above case) should have all benefits when loosing a job?!

I was on JSA and signed off when I got a place on the J visa internship scheme. Signed back on without a problem when I came home.

Thanks for all the replies and the clarification that I am not a social welfare fraudster!! to be honest a lot of people think if you have any savings you are not entitled to any JSA.

It would be great if I could do this work abroad but it would not be worth it if I were to lose my entitlements when I came back looking for work in the autumn.
Can anyone point me to where it makes reference to this on the government website ?

You can have up to €20, 000 before you are means tested. This is not fraud, this is under the Departments of Social Protection Guidelines.

Anyone can apply for JA at anytime, they will means test you again, but aslong as you still qualify under the conditions, there should be no problem. Good luck if you do get to go and work in the states for the summer.

You really will be okay to claim JSA when you come back. Habitual Residency issues will not arise through your going to the States for such a short contract job but perhaps the best way to put your mind at rest is for you to go to the SW office and ask directly. Take a note of the name of the person you talk to etc.

I wonder what age you are and ask because when you come off JSB directly to JSA you are, of course, subject to means testing but you are not caught by age reduced payments now applicable to under 25s. Should you be under 25 and breaking off your claim for JSA which commenced after JSB, I wonder if they will apply the age reduced payments to you? Of course, you may be over 25 and this not an issue.
