Moving to cork, advice on places to live?

Moving to cork for work in may, will be working in Mahon point, I don't know cork that well but have a sister in midleton. We're a single car family with no kids, but have a small dog, that probably means no apartments. I'm looking for advice on areas to live that are close to public tranport ( like not having to walk ages to get bus/train). Wife out of work but hoping to rectify that once we move.

    Areas to recommend?

    Or to avoid?

As we're single income it can't be too expensive ( currently in the midlands in a 3 bed semi @ 550 a month ) now I know we won't get anything like that in cork, but any advice would be great...

best links to mahon point , if you dont want to live in mahon are prob bishopstown/wilton as it has the number 19 bus to mahon , also the number 10 goes to mahon and that passes through glasheen very near wilton.

If it was me i would place myself near wilton as you have access to plenty of bus routes.

I would advise living close to work, traffic in the mornings and evenings around Mahon Point can be crazy. Luckily though there are loads of areas you can live that are close by and are nice.

You could live around Blackrock, Skehard road or Beaumont and be within walking distance. You could also choose anywhere along the Ballinlough road where you could pick up the number 10, or even on the Douglas road where you could take a short walk to join up with the number 10.

    +1 on that....
I just moved from Blackrock and the traffic can be crazy around there, so it would be ideal if you could live near by. Also there are some good amenities in that area, a gorgeous walkway, plenty of shopping, buses to city etc. Only thing is, rent can be quite expensive in that area so your choices may be limited. Not many places say 'pets allowed' either, but I wouldn't be afraid to ask.

Start looking on Daft at Blackrock, Mahon, Ballinlough, Skehard Road, Douglas (a little bit further out) to get an idea.

Are you fully reliant on bus routes?

Working in Mahon point is quite bike friendly if if that helps any - loads of bike lines linking it so that, even from city centre, it's quite a lovely, nice and safe cycle to and from Mahon. If your employer is in the bike tax scheme it can be quite a cheap thing to get a new bike and the savings on bus fare each day add up. It's also a great way to get to know the city.

    Thanks for the replies
Wouldn't have much of a problem cycling to work in fine weather if it's hassle free, an excuse to excersise.

Not really reliant on buses, but the option is nice, planning ahead if herself gets a job and either of us have the car on a particular day. Have a few daft searches saved and will keep an eye.

Looking forward to city life again, lived in Dublin for ten years but it burned me out.

Blackrock and that general area would be a bit pricey for rent though? It's a pretty affluent area...
Little Island might be more reasonable - and it's still quite close.

Agree, if you base yourself around Ballinlough you would be about 1.5 miles from the centre of town and about 1.5 miles from mahon point as well in the opposite direction. The number 10 passes by very regularly sa well.

Defo, you don't want to be in Wilton and commuting to Mahon, awful ball ache of a journey at rush hour.

Have a look at Glanmire as well. Nice area with everything you need close by i.e. supermarket, takeaways etc.... Only 10 min drive to Mahon Point, unless traffic is very bad and 10 min drive into the city. There's bus service from there into the city as well.

I think the OP needs to consider living somewhere along the no.10 bus route to make him less reliant on the car, he could also consider living on the no.19 route but that would mean a short walk after the bus to get to work.
Remember they are a one car houshold.
Jaco's Island would be a modern development within walking distance of work? The going rate for a 2 bed apartment here is €800-€900 per month, here's one. It is near a shopping centre & the no.10 runs from here so getting into town should be OK, not exactly near pubs, etc. tough. Not sure how you would fare with the dog. And another.

Here's a house in Blackrock for €700 pm, might get away with the dog here. No direct bus to work though, a bit too far to walk me thinks.

Finally a house close by in a mainly corporation housing area, €850pm. This one would be a short walk to work. There's a garden with it so you might get away with the dog.

Best of luck with the house hunting

evergreen street is a really long street , its sort of on a main road too , if your down the barrack street end id imagine there could be a bit of noise when people are heading home after clubs in town etc , but nothing too bad id imagine

I would suggest investing in ear plugs.
