GP Internships

Is anybody here involved in GP training? I'm interested in becoming a GP, and currently applying for an Intern post next year.

My problem is that I was based mainly in Vincent's Hospital as a student. I really love the atmosphere of the hospital and obviously a lot of my classmates will be there next year as interns, and I'd like to stay there for most of next year. But there's no GP internships linked to Vincent's.

Does anyone have any idea how important a GP internship placement might be when applying for a GP scheme next year? I've already done an elective and an audit, and intend doing a bit more between now and the interviews. Would I be OK in doing general med/surg jobs in Vincent's? Or would this be seen not only as not doing a GP internship placement, but also an unwillingness to push myself beyond my comfort zone?

I do know people who got onto schemes this year having done general med/surg internships, but there were less GP placements this year, so I'm wondering would it more or less be expected that next year's applicants would have done one?

    Any thoughts on the matter?

A lot of the last couple of Vincents classes have gone on to do GP, not only in the UCD scheme, but throughout the country. I think if you do a few electives, try to get a couple of audits of even some original GP research under your belt, that should cover that aspect of the selection process without any hassle.
