Fitter / Aircraft mechanic apprenticeships

    Hi folks,

I've been looking at going back to education and have a CAO application in for a few Mechanical Engineering courses. I'd be a mature student (I'm 28) but I'm not so sure about going back to full time education in this way, because by the time I get out of college after 4 years, I'd have no experience and would be starting from scratch. Also, I'd be afraid I'd really struggle with the maths, and I wouldn't cope because I've been out of education for a good while, and I tend to be more practical minded and hands on than academic. For these reasons mainly, I've been looking at doing an apprenticeship instead.

I love machines, and love knowing how things work, and I'd have a good aptitude for all things mechanical, and I wanted to do something that would play to these strengths. I'd initially been looking at doing an apprenticeship as an aircraft mechanic. I've got applications into all the companies that I've found that do these apprenticeships, and I'm watching closely to see if any apprenticeship positions come up on the websites. I was talking to a chap from Lufthansa Airmotive in Dublin who was telling me that they take on apprentice fitters. Up until then, I had never thought of this, but I am actually very interested now because it seems to be a pretty diverse field which could lead to a lot more than the aircraft mechanic apprenticeship would.

Really what I'm looking for is a bit of general advice, and where I should be looking and who I should be speaking to about doing a fitter apprenticeship. Any help at all that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    Ross
