Waterford City to Cork City - routes and options?

Considering driving to Cork tomorrow to try save myself a trip on another day, but google maps suggests it'll take 90-120mins and isn't on the greatest roads. Considering I've made Redcow to Cork in 2 hours, that doesn't seem great for a journey half the distance.

Anyone have any experience of the drive?

Its a long times sine I made the trip, but I suspect google is overstating the journey time. Of course, it does depend on the points you are traveling between. Generally the N25 is better than the N24, but going via the N24 means you can use the M8 for half the trip. Don't use the N72 or the R666. The N25 is a good bit shorter also.

    Suggested routes
    1. 1 hour 29 mins
    N25
    110 km
    2. 1 hour 37 mins
    N25 and N72
    115 km
    3. 1 hour 40 mins
    N24 and M8
    136 km

Hi, I drive this route regularly. It seriously depends on when you are going. Dungarvan and the Co. Cork towns really slow things down if its near peak time. 1hr 30mins from City centre to city centre is about right if your traveling between 1pm-5pm. At night I have done it in 1hr 10. The road is ok for the most part but places just get in the way! Also Cork can be mental to get into esp. Merchants Quay or the Tunnel-South Ring Road

After you've gone thru Dungarvan and gone up the incline there's a lay-by which has beautiful views of the bay.

It's a great spot to pull in and stretch the legs or have a sandwich. I've done that drive plenty of times and the roads aren't too bad imo.

I generally took the N25 route, but the M8/N24 route wouldn't take much longer and would be a less stressful drive in my opinion.

N25. There are worse routes. Only serious bottle neck is Castlemartyr.

I live near Dungarvan and go to Cork often so If it was me I'd take the N25, it'a a good road.

the N25 is not bad at all, but nor is the N24 alternative which was my choice usually (to North Cork) rather than vis Dungarvan and N72. the Bridge would alter this now of course.

The N72 as far as Fermoy is not too bad btw....not a viable route for you though
