My Ford Focus needs to be topped up with oil. Only brought it recently and not sure what oil is in at the moment. Says 5W30 or 5W40 in the owners manual. Do I have to top up the oil with the same oil in it atm or can you pick 5W30 & 5W40? Also, should it be synthetic or part-synthetic.

Look in handbook or if you have a service book. Sometimes it's noted on a sticker in the window, on the engine or drivers door sill (prob not on engine but have a look anyway).

Autodata says the 1.4 petrol takes 5w30 semi synthetic in a moderate
    climate......In a hot climate it takes 10w30.

    Owners Guide says 5W-30 & 5W-40.

I'm not sure whats in it at the moment, does the top up oil have to be the same or cant you mix 5W-30 & 5W-40?

If its due or close to a service then just change the oil and filter,
if not then I'd top it up with 5w30 as any oil is better than no oil.......:)

different oils are for different engine , petrol or diesel

just top it up a little, watch dip stick
dont overfill , oil expands when hot, has to go somewhere
keep it between low and high
no harm to carry a half bottle of oil with you anyway

If its been serviced any way correctly previously then it should only have 5w30 in it any way so if you just need to top it up then go with the 5w30.

However if you don't know the service history etc then just have it serviced and start your own service record from there.

Would it be 5W-30 Synthetic or part synthetic?
