Right lads the mk3 mondeos. Any good? Seems to be a good few on donedeal with quite low asking prices. Example; http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1861818 yeah i know, no mention of nct but thats a lot of car for 900 spuds.
Whats the motors opinion of them? Best engine? 1.8, 2.0, diesel or petrol? Ive heard the early mondeo diesel engines were reliable but rough as nails. Are the zetecs reliable? To compare to say the likes of a 2.0ltr vtec honda accord (which i know is a decent car) the ford with the same size engine is capable of 36/37mpg combined whereas the honda manages a cheeky 31/32.

The main reason why ive developed an interest in mondeos is due to the fact there are plenty of hatchback models & a huge estate variant which would suite me perfectly as i have a lot of camping/fishing gear to haul around for the summer months. Example; http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1973933

So good people of motors, the ford mondeo? Is it a good car?

Firstly that looks like a hard 90k tbh.

My father gets mid 30s with ease out of that engine in the new model Modeo. His trip is reading about 34mpg with mostly suburban driving. Think the early mk3s had swirl flaps in that engine which could cause problems.

1.8 LX Mondeo only had 110bhp and trying to move the big estate body around, go for at least the Zetec as it had 125bhp from the 1.8 litre.

Have you looked at a Rover 75?

the 1.8 petrol is unreliable would only be slightly better than the rover 75. nice car to drive and not bad on fuel but only good for 100k. better of buying a 2.0 litre or better again the diesel

    Big, comfy and spacious :)
1.8 is not great, 2.0 will be thirsty and the boggo diesels are rotten (I put 25K miles on one). If a 115bhp or 130bhp diesel came along at the right price it would be a decent buy once the DMF or injectors didn't cause you trouble. The 90hp yokes are woeful though.

    The mark 3 TDCi is a great car provided you do your homework;

130+bhp and feels like it, handles great for it's size too, parts are cheap and plentiful, you'll also find it hard to find a car easier to work on if you're into a bit of home mechanics. They're big inside, lots of room for 5 adults or the kids and their bits and a month's shopping :D

That said, the DMF goes around the 100k miles mark, regardless of how it's driven, check it's been changed and you'll have a car good for another 100k or so. The engines are unburstable, most have chain driven cams so no worries about cam belts and the likes, never heard about the swirl flap issue (not even sure they have them TBH).
They do have a major problem with the fuel delivery system, the delphi system is crap, pumps go (and can take the entire system with them) due to a design fault in early ones, injectors can also wear out (helped along by dirty fuel we get here), these are expensive, read around €150 per injector to recondition, there are several companies here that provide the service.

I have one and love driving it, you'll do a 300+ mile round trip in more comfort than some luxury brands can provide, I love the pick-up from the engine and how it handles, I've had the injectors done and pump checked (fine thank god), the clutch and DMF were new when I bought it so I've fared pretty well.

    Super car, the MK3.

i got a 2001 model and have it 3 years or so. Regarding maintenance it is pretty bomb proof. The only thing I had to do was replace a AC pipe and the rear coils which were causing a rattle., It also walked the nct 3 weeks ago,did no maintence to it as I had no time.. didnt even adjust the lights in 3 years.

have done regular oil changes and all that. I worked out a full tank did ca 450miles. Not bad for a 125hp engine.

oh, if you get a mondeo get a zetec or better. Lx ones are just a waste.

I was seriously considering a ST220 lately, seen some remarkable examples here in the uk.

I had Mitsubishis, BMWs and Hondas before and I am well impressed with the mondeo.

I am not so sure on 1.6 litre engines on the new variations, way too weedy

my 132k mondeo begs to differ :p

saying a car is dead meat after 100k is bs tbh, any car that is looked after can keep going as long as the earth is rotating, especially modern engines.

    not just mondeos, any car.

well maybe apart from some french ones...:)

1.8 duratec se engines impossible to get, and its not because they break down either...if you did get one it would cost as much as the car.

I think you must be driving the balls off your cars, do you service them right?

I have indeed but there is no hatchback variant of the 75 & diesel estate 75's are very rare in this country. Not one for sale in donedeal.

Since someone on boards (think it was shadowhearth) recommended a...yes im going to say it!....a Toyota Carina estate ive been looking at the bloody things every day on donedeal. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1847043 Huge boot on the yoke, plenty big enough to take all my gear without having to fold down back seats.

Anybody know what the 1.8 petrol engine is like in the carina? Fuel economy reasonable? Lots of info on the 1.6 leanburn but not a lot of info on the bigger capacity motor. Is a 1996/97 car just too old to take on?

    got a 1.8 zetec

very understated car, forget the rep mobile crap. mondo mk3 is a solid all rounder and i have done huge trips on it without a bother.

    forget lx models.

zetec, or platnium spec much better.. or a titanium x if you are importing from uk.

i dont have any idea on diesel and never even drove a diesel car. my mondo get about 400 miles on a full tank.

    just get a service history.

    very much doubt it..

its probably for a higher spec car...doubt the hardware is wired for a simple switch.

if the country is full of 1.8 mondeos. which it is because are car tax charges means nobody buys 2.0. then why is itso hard to get an engine unles of course they are cack

If I was buying a sub €4k Mondeo I'd buy a 2 litre. Small amount extra and close on the same running costs. Post 02 avoid swirlf flap issues and are usually higher spec.
