Car battery light

The battery light in my ford courier keeps flashing at irregular intervals. It goes off when I start up as usual but comes on and off as I drive usually for longer times as I slow down and deccelerate.

I think I might just need a new battery but am wondering could the light mean that the altenator is packing up.

    Altenator more than likely.

The two most likely causes are a loose alternator drive belt or an alternator faulty. Less likely is a battery faulty, or a problem with the battery management system.

No that light does not tell ya about battery problems, it does tell ya that the alternator is not charging the battery right.Since you mention about the squeaky belt, that's a good possibility.

I've seen this before on Ford diesel alternators and it is usually the regulator inside the alternator that has failed. The regulators can be replaced as a separate item. If you are offered an exchange alternator then make sure the pulley is absolutely identical to your original one. There are 3 or 4 different ones used....;)
