    Hey...

I've been looking around for ages for the failure statistics for 1st Science (Math/Bio/Chem/Phys), and I can't find them. Does anyone have any idea was percentage of people fail? I'm not particularly confident I will pass.

Have you attended your lab practicals and got your assignments in?

Not sure, it's high enough. I remember hearing 30% before but that could be wrong, and I think that might include people who also just drop out... either way, knowing the failure rates won't really change your chance of success! Remember there are always the repeats, so just give it your best.

This is an article I found which details the 1st science failure rates back in 2003 if that's any help to ya......
Of the 521 first year science students at UCC, 411 (78.9pc) passed, 55 (10.6pc) failed and 55 (10.6pc) did not sit the exam. At UCD, with the most popular university science programme, 284 (67.14pc) of first years passed, 77 (18.2pc) failed, 61 (14.42pc) were absent and one withdrew.

At DCU, a total of 245 sat exams in a range of Science faculty courses, excluding nursing, and 49 (20pc) failed. A total of 235 students sat exams for undergraduate degree courses in Science in 2002/03 and 45 (19.1pc) failed.

Of the 563 first year science students at NUIG, 446 (79.2pc) passed and 124 (20.8pc) failed.

First year failure rates at UL, where numbers of science courses were relatively small, ranged up to 11pc.

There are no comparable figures for first year failure rates in other subjects. The most recent study on overall non-completion rates put Science at 22.2pc, ahead of the general non-completion rate of 16.8pc.

The equivalent rate for Computer Studies was 26.9pc and for Engineering/Architecture, 19.6pc.

    http://www.independent.ie/education/latest-news/industry-alarm-as-20pc-of-first-year-science-students-fail-196614.html

I'm in 3rd science myself and this year and last year we saw massive fail rates across a number of subjects ranging from 50% to 66% in subjects with Microbiology and Zoology being the worst.

We were even told that we were the worst 3rd year class ever based on the xmas result for Micro:eek:

(This did not include me thank goodness, passed with flying colours so it can be done:))

If you go to labs, hand up assignments, turn up to exams, you'll pass.

The only difficulty may be chemistry. If you havent done it for the leaving cert people seemed to find it very hard and there was a high failure rate with that.

Not sure about chemistry or biology, but the class size for physics and maths (honours) dropped substantially this year in 2nd science compared to the sizes last year. that might be due to people dropping the subjects, but there's a lot of faces i saw in classes last year that aren't around anymore.

maths last year used to be in one of the big lecture halls (cairnes, am250) but now we all fit into one of the small classrooms along the concourse.

I've attended enough practicals (missed 3) and handed in most of my lab reports. I've also attempted all my assignments.

Seems I only have a one in five chance of passing, I may start studying chemistry (Did it for the LC, but forget most of it)...

That's true but also i was told that we had to get over 60% to be allowed to keep up the honours course, otherwise we would have to do Mathematical Studies instead...Rachel Quinlan told me that last year even though I know a guy that didn't got over 60 but still was allowed keep it up!

Statistically 60% of 1st year science students living in corrib village fail.

Thats what I was told last year when I lived there... I guess I was part of that 40% that did pass. :P

Basically if you did the majority of your assignments, did your lab reports, and went to your tutorials you WILL pass unless you're thicker than a lamp-post (which I doubt since you passed your LC and got into uni). :pac:

Basically if you know your LC Maths/Phys/Chem/Bio pretty well you shouldn't fail if you study a little bit.

Why are you worried about failure rates in general?
You have no control over that ... seems to me, if you spent more time worrying about your own personal pass rate, you might have a bit more confidence in your own ability to pass exams.

Worrying about the other incompetent muppets will never change the fact that they are still going to fail ... but it quite likely will increase the risk of you failing yourself!

Not trying to be insulting ... just making an observation.

    Best of luck!
