    How's it going?

I have a replacement door on my car which is not the same color as the car its self. I want to get it sprayed so it matches up with the rest of the car but I'm unsure of the cost. Money is a little tight so if it is out of my price range I wont bother.

    Anybody any ideas?

    Thannks :)

Not really a DIY thread, but how and ever.

What year of car is it, and what make model? If it's something old and you don't care, you can get the door itself painted, and bolted on. If it's something relatively new, and you value it, you need to have the panels left and right of it blown in with the new colour too.

Cheapo option, somewhere around 350. Don't underestimate the amount of work involved in painting a door.

Proper option, somewhere close to 800 I'd think.

If your really stuck for money there is another option but won't give as good of a finish as a professional. Get a can of paint made up at your local factors and do it yourself. I've just done it with a bumper and was really suprised at how well it turned out. Obviously a paint shop would do a far better job but for around €25 I cant complain!

Haha yea in an ideal world this is what I would do but if I make a complete mess of it I have no come back. Thanks all the same do..

It's an 02 VW Bora. Not a chance of me payin €350 for it do. It can stay as it is if thats the going rate. If that is the going rate thats a mad sum of money. You would easily spray the door in well under a day so that €350 a day minimum! I should of been a sprayer / panel beater.

TBH, if you think a door's 'easily sprayed in a day', you're in for a reality check if you visit a bodyshop. A door's one of the most difficult parts of a car to paint.

I was waiting for that reply. Maybe I was lucky but I was more than happy with the result.

This is the DIY forum, we love having a go, but doing a door with an Aerosol is probably the worst idea I've heard of in ages :)

Would it take more than 8 hours to paint a door? Im not asking that in a smart way but I'm just wondering!

I understand the preparation would take a while, and then the masking up of the car can be time consuming but more than 8 hours work? Really??

    They're separate trade since the 70s ;)
Not the easiest of jobs either (by some stretch) :)

Ever disassembled a door? You have to take locks off, rubbing strips off, latches off, the door card without breaking any clips, the interior handles, electric window switches, the electric window motor, the window regulator, the glass, the bowden cable, the wing mirror, the weather sealing plastic, the speakers, all the cables coming into the door, and the rubber sealing strips. There's hours in stripping a door carefully let alone getting it ready for paint. Reassembly's tough too, and refitting it so all the gaps are correct can be very fiddly, and especially so nothing's rattly afterwards. I reckon for a proper job of just changing the door's colour, you're talking bodyshop wise, 2-3 days.

Plus - doors are one of the few panels which must be razor straight, any wiggles, dents, high spots, can be noticed a mile away, and the prep time is a bugger in getting this just right.

ya i suppose most people think of a door being the outside only but of course if it is a different colour then as described above has to be done
