Ford Fiesta mpg?

My mum bought a Fiesta brand new in 2009 (it's the latest version) with the 1.25l petrol engine. Ever since then she has been complaining that it's heavy on fuel. She only usually drives short distances (no motorway stints) so I put it down to that. But recently she started telling me about it again, so I looked into it and I noticed that the trip computer never reports above 31 or 32 mpg, it's usually in the high 20's. After a bit of poking around on the net, I gather that the combined cycle mpg should be somewhere in the forties. My mum usually drives about 5 miles to and from work each day and that's it. Should we be expecting a higher mpg figure, or does this sound right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers! :)

If she's doing short start stop traffic runs that's all she will get. Check the tyre pressure is correct, this will have an impact if she's driving around with underinflated tyres.

A relation has an 09 Titanium and gets well over av. 40mpg even with mostly shortish trips.

If journeys are very short the engine won't get warm enough and mpg will be poor.

Yeah, she wouldn't be the most efficient driver in the world, but I've been on a few drives with her and she would change into 4th and 5th when required. I wouldn't mind taking the car off her for a few days, bringing it on a few longish journeys and trying to keep the mpg down to see what I'd get, but she loves the smallness of her car and there's no way she'd take mine

Has it been serviced regularly? Even replacing the air filter can make a huge difference

Yeah, it's been serviced on the button!:)

Apparently she even said it to them the last time, and they just said that Ford's tend to be typically harder on fuel.....?

We have a 06 1.25 Fiesta and its very much geared for city driving. It will happily drive at 50km/h in 5th but the downside is when you hit the motorway and its pulling fairly high revs at motorway speeds. Perhaps get you mum into the habit of changing up through the gears quicker keeping the revs low

32MPG on a supermini is terrible. As the Yaris, Micra and Polo generally give 55 MPG on paper. With the Avg being about 45-50MPG with real life driving! But Fords are not great for petrol engine! As all there larger cars are Diesel now!
