Today, our principal had a talk with us about TY and 5th Year etc. etc. We're also having a meeting this Tuesday about Leaving Cert subjects. We have to make our mind up before the East holidays. I guess this is the same everywhere but anyway have you all made your decision about doing TY or not and what subjects for the Leaving Cert will you be doing. Personally, since most of my friends aren't doing TY I will probably follow also. I'm not too sure on subjects but this is what I'm thinking:
    English Maths Irish
    Physics
    Chemistry
    Engineering
    Business/Geography/French

At the moment, we're being engulfed with subject choices and all that craic. 5th years are running up to us telling us about subjects and all that. I'm hoping to do TY, but my subject choices for 5th year are:

    Maths, English, irish,
    Art,
    French,
    History,
    Geography.

Does anyone know how you are picked to go into TY? There's about 80 of us, and 48 are only allowed. We need to go for an interview, and write a letter. But besides that, how are you picked? How young you are? How *good* you are? Detentions?
My twin wants to do it, really bad, but they aren't the .... best academically and they're a bit of a messer. She tries very hard though, she' not lazy at all so the subjects she does OL in it's because she's not able.
I will literally cry if she doesn't get in, and I do, really. It's either both of us get in, or none. I've been with her all this time and I can't "leave" her. I know we'll go separate ways in collage but still. I'll be devastated if she doesn't get in.
So, is there a certain way to get picked? JW. :D

I'm doing TY, we had a meeting about it last Thursday I think it was!
My whole class of 28 is doing it!
There's only four in my year skipping it, and they're having a bit of trouble trying to do art. Apparently there's too many people wanting to do it.

In my school everyone has to do TY, except in extreme circumstances, you can only skip it if you are a certain age, you prove you are able for the workload in 5th, and your parents agree to it. Noone is not aloud do TY, unlike in most school? I'd hate to be told I cant to do TY :O
Because of this we havent had any meetings about subject choices, cos we do that in 4th year, but i still know what i want to do, and if in 4th i dont get the choices i want to do, im moving schools tbh, im not letting my school determine my future just because they cant fit me in a class :/ but my school is verryyy small, theres about 40 people in my year, so i think the only problem i would have is a lack of interest in certain subjects, but i dont think that will be a problem for me, i know at least 5 people in my year who want to do the same classes as me :) woo
    i want to do:
English, Irish, Maths, History, Biology, Physics and Spanish :)
Id love to do chemistry but unfortunatly i Cant, because my school doesnt have the equiptment needed (small school as i said before), but my science teacher is qualified and she said she would tutor me and a few of my friends after school if we want to do it :)

    Hi,
Regarding TY, in my school at least, it's more or less a first come first serve thing. People that have a bad record such as many suspensions will not be allowed in. A few detentions here and there won't be any harm so your "twin" will probably get in. It really depends on the demand for TY and how many people they have to narrow it down to. I haven't heard of an interview or letter before???!!! Anyway that's what I think.

Oh and I was just wondering would you not consider doing a Science subject? You really narrow your choices when you don't do one.. Just a heads up, but you probably aren't going down that road...

    Hope this helps,
    James.

Also, edit to my subjects (decided to not do Chemistry coz you only need it for densitry etc.)
    Irish English Maths
    Physics
    Business
    Ag Science (maybe/probably)
    Engineering/Geography

I'm completely on the fence about TY, we've had a talk about it but it didn't help! Parent's information evening is Tuesday maybe that will help because it'll be easier to discuss it with mum once she knows what it is!!:p We had to make "preliminary choices" on Tuesday unless we were absolutely sure about TY so that we can see what subjects are available to us if we continue on to 4th year. we had to choose 6 even though we can only do 4 just for back-up. I chose: music
    chemistry
    accountancy
    history
    Back ups: Spanish, physics
But I thought about it and even though I want to do history I should switch it with Spanish (even though I'm not sure about doing Spanish, as long as it doesn't clash with another subject on the timetable I'll do it) SO CONFUSING!!!

Are you sure about not having Spanish in your top preferences - if you don't end up doing it it's going to rule out a huge amount of college courses for you. Unless you're absolutely sure that what you want to do won't require a European language, you might want to think about keeping it on.

I'm not doing TY, just wanna get out of school tbh. Doing Irish, English, Maths, French, History, Biology, Chemistry.

Yeah see that's what I was saying, I'm gonna switch it with history so history will be a back-up instead. But not doing Spanish won't actually rule me out of any courses because I was born in England so as a mere technicality I can use Irish as a foreign language to get into those courses! But I want to keep on Spanish if I can because it might help to get a job if I have a european language and seeing as I don't know what I want to do yet, I don't want to rule myself out of any jobs.

Oh sorry, damn skim reading. :p That's fine so, I'd recommend using Spanish too.
Your subjects are very similiar to mine, or at least what I wanted to do. Unfortunately I had to sub in Biology for Accounting because I think I'm going to need two sciences, although I'd have loved to do Accounting.

Hey but wait, you only have six subjects there if you include Irish, English, Maths. Do ye not do 7? If you did, you could do both History and Spanish.

Are you sure you didn't miss music when you were skim - reading? I might end up doing history instead of music because we need 10 people for a class and it looks like if I go on to 4th year there won't be enough for a class but if I do TY there might, just depends on the 2nd years.... And music is the one subject I definitely wanna keep on!:(
