How many of your friends and family are unemployed?

I was just thinking about this today out of all my close friends and family im the only one who is unemployed, well up until last Friday when my sister was made redundant. I actually dont even know anybody else who lost their job in the past few years. For example two of my immediate family members have just started new jobs in the past month, friends have been in the same jobs for years, other friends have moved onto better jobs in the past year and a few have emigrated but not because they lost their jobs but to go traveling etc.

So theres me still looking for jobs all the time and applying for everything I can and either being rejected or ignored. I sometimes think my friends and family dont realise how hard it is to find a job and I mean any job at the moment since none of them have been in this situation in this economic climate. I never feel any pressure from any of them but sometimes I just hate saying im unemployed. When anybody asks me what im doing at the moment I just tell them im in college since I am studying part time one day a week but I do feel id be ashamed if I said I was not working. I know I shouldnt be but since nobody I know is umemployed I feel Im the only one.

How many of your friends and family are unemployed?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum :o

depends on what you'd call unemployed, my aunt doesn't work but has enough money to last her until she dies, same for my grandmother, i was made redundant last year but i wouldn't say I'm unemployed, i am a full-time parent to my daughter and do various voluntary work and im currently studying too....im not receiving welfare, no-one in my family is.

    it means you aren't employed...

Stay at home parents don't count though cos that's pretty much full time work

Out of my group of friends, only one had employment up until about a month ago. All but two are employed now, thats because they moved to England. This country just cant provide a proper life for most of its people.

Most of my friends are employed (1 has been on the dole since 2004, he's thinking of turning pro;)) and all of my family are working. Both my brother-in-laws were made redundant in the last two years but both found work fairly quick. I know plenty out of work, but close family and friends are doing ok.
edit; i forgot my wife's brother is unemployed and immigrating in a few months.

Not necessarily, its defined as "Actively seeking employment", so if your not looking for a Job, your not technically unemployed, you are "Out of the Labour Force", if i remember correctly.

    /pedantic

I think people should tell the truth about being unemployed. I have my own business but it is one where I provide a service and then issue an invoice for work done. It is extremely difficult to get payment as most of my work is a once-a-year service and since the recession many clients appear to be thinking "I don't need him for another year so he can wait until I need him again before I pay him".

I might as well be unemployed as cashflow is almost non-existent but I have no compunction about telling people about the difficulty.

My partner was made redundant last year and she has no problem telling the truth. While reluctance to admit unemployment might have had somewhat of a stigma in some peoples' eyes a few years back, nowadays there is more sympathy than scorn from others.

My brother and his wife worked in the same place which went into liquidation in 2009 and they don't mind saying they are unemployed. They have had no negative comment, only sympathy and a pledge to help in whatever way someone can.

I really only have one good friend/family member who's unemployed. He's a tradesman, lost his job with Mercury about two years back. Has been doing odd bits and pieces since then, but he hasn't been too pushed getting a job because they bought a shell of a house and he's spent a lot of time doing it up while unemployed.

Another mate came back from Oz 2 weeks ago. So he's technically unemployed, but I wouldn't count him as long-term. He had/has a job in Oz waiting for him if he chooses to go back, which he probably won't.

Everyone else that I know who lost a job in the recession has gotten a better one (though not necessarily better paid, just a better job).

My sisters job looks like it's on the line, which is a right kick in the arse-hole for the family, because he's in construction and has been out of work for some time now. Since the 'celtic tiger' they've a mortgage on an over-priced house in the middle of fúcking nowhere, and a kid. I'd take them in into my place in a flash if needs be, though I've a shyte load on my own plate. I resigned from a job to go to college to change career path (bad timing, but the company is gone since), found myself unable to get work after it and family problems ever since are hampering any efforts I make, and a nasty little split to boot. I don't know how I could manage a job interview without eye-twitching my way through it right now.

This. I've something lined up for after Easter. If I don't do this for myself, I think I might actually wind up in the nut house.

Off-topic: I've just watched some fúcking tit trying to glue plastic together with a wood-adhesive (currently has a job). There is hope for us all yet.

Out of all my family and friends they are all still working in the same jobs they were working at 3 or 4 years ago. None of them have lost their jobs. Thankfully.

im a student, but no job so technically unemployed and will most likely be unemployed for real in the summer :(

my uncle is unemployed too, as is my best mate and a couple of cousins. and an aunt come to think of it.

apart from that my immediate family are all employed, for now at least!

I am employed as are all of my immediate family (one sister in college though) and core group of friends. Have some more distant friends out of work and some who have emigrated. One of my core friends emigrated aright but he wanted to, he would almost definitely have work if he was here.

Oh one of my house mates is unemployed too but he is happy enough to take a break from work for a bit, he would get plenty bits and pieces for doing here and there if he wanted them.

no, it's a discussion about a fairly relevant topic that you have the choice to either participate in, or not.

fair few of my mates are out of work at the mo. Family wise most are okay, few living abroad working away too.

**** your on to me :D

No Im just interested since like 400,000 are signing on every month and I dont seem to know of anybody umemployed bar me and my sister. Speaking of the census I think it will show the real number of people not working since some people may not be signing on to the live register.

I actually only know 1 person who is unemployed.
Even in 2006 I knew 2 pople who were unemployed.

Dont forget the huge majority of people in Ireland are employed.

Rubbish. There's far more people employed than unemployed.

    "Most"? More rabble-rabble scaremongering BS.

As has been the case since the year dot.
You make yourself employable, or you dont, and just complain that its not your fault.
Even to pass an exam you have to get 40%.
To be employed you just have to not let yourself get into the bottom 15%
