Contacting your current employer

Hey I have a quick question.

I have submitted an application for a job with another company (In Europe) but I already have a job (In Asia). I haven't given my current employer as a reference but I am a little worried that they may try to contact them.

If my current employer knew I was looking for another position I would be fired on the spot without so much as a handshake. (Yes I know this is illegal in Ireland / Europe etc but it's not here).

Is it standard procedure to contact someones current employer ?

    Thanks.

In Ireland it would'nt be normal to contact a present employer without getting asked first.

i always have given references as "on request" on my CV. Any careers advisor i have spoken to and books agree on this. They also say they should only be required if there is a job offer on the table pending references to be checked.
