Pea-shooting

So I had this small idea...
    Peashooting
One of the many funny jokes airgun shooters get from people who’ve never tried the sport because airguns aren’t loud enough for them, is the title of “Peashooter”.

I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ve had a fun thought.

How about the NTSA – or one of the airgun clubs – brings in something akin to the old DURC Standards, namely the “Pea Shooter” title?

See, here’s the thing. Your average garden pea is about 8mm in diameter. That’s just inside the 10.5mm diameter of the 8 ring on an air rifle target:

    10mAR Pea Target

In fact, if my math is right, you have to shoot a 8.4 or higher to hit the area on the target that’s the size of your average garden pea. Which is about the 516/336 level in air rifle, which is a good point for a mid-range novice prize.

Seriously – this might be a neat way to get people to enjoy the first few months of the sport – get some badges made up, like the old DURC standards, it’d be easy enough to measure off the electronic targets, no extra prizes, just a list of “pea shooters” published in the results and rankings, that sort of thing…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in F-Class a 5" bull at 1000yds is the equivalent of trying to hit a 1.38mm bull at 10 metres. 8mm easypeasy:D

Yeah, but in F-Class you get to lie down, and use a scope, and the 10mm bull is 0.5mm in air rifle. :p

Sorry, just on a point of clarification:

Are we discussing Marrowfat or Petit Pois or Split?

This sort of technicality regarding the size, diameter, dimensions, and classification of the abovementioned proposed Legumic Target Shooting must be resolved forthwith!

Surely, you can't expect Marrowfat Peashooters to compete in the same competitions as Petit Pois Shooters? That's insane, and the sort of elitism that has brought us to this pretty pass!! Pea'd off, you bet I am. Typical, Petit Pois-ist shooters attitudes!

I'm actually slightly worried that I'd already thought of that and was talking about a fresh garden pea, not a lentil, not a field pea, not a petit pois. Average diameter is 8mm, so we use the nominal pea model instead of an actual pea (though we allow derogations for those running novelty competitions to set up actual peas for "reactive pea shooting targets".

    *ahem*

You did open this particular bag of frozen legumes, let it be recorded...

I must post a pic of my 'peashooter' when I get a chance. It's a 60mm breechloaded smoothbore airgun with a 1.5m barrel. Fired using a solenoid valve. I built it for a research group who needed to fire projectiles at aircraft grade aluminium sheets.

Question: Is this the only airgun (peashooter) in the country to be classed as a restricted firearm?;)

Unusual answer: No, not if anyone has a .22cal air pistol :D

Just as a side note, UCD held the first peashooter match today as part of their UCD Open :)
Damn near thing (oh, how I love changing position and shot routine and six other things at once), but I managed to make the list with the last string :D

And here's the Peashooter list from the match:
    Sean Baldwin|DFST
    Terry Wearen|DFST
    Aisling Miller|DURC
    Emily Wallace|DURC
    Frank Lavery|DURC
    Kate Wilhelm|DURC
    Michael Cullinan|DURC
    Siobhan Scarlett|DURC
    Cillian O'Sullivan|UCDRC
    Donal Bourke|UCDRC
    John Lancaster|UCDRC
    Tian Carey|UCDRC
    Mark Dennehy|WTSC
    Paul O'Boyle|WTSC

.177 and I were talking about the idea and we thought we should also have an air pistol version - garden peas aren't really at the same level of difficulty for pistols, so we took the score you had to hit to hit a pea, figured where than landed on an air pistol target and walked through the vegetable bin to see what qualified, and guess what, small new potatoes do :D

So here's the Spudgun list :
    Tom O'Brien|MPAI
    John O'Brien|RRPC

    :D
