Whats a decent score for a beginner?

I played a round of golf yesterday, my 5th time playing, but first "real" time with my own clubs etc.
I got a score of 120 on 72 par course, with only 2 real disaster holes (shot a 10 and a 12, both down to being unable to hit the ball properly with 3 wood).
now the times I went out before I scored 150-160, but with hired clubs on 2 occasions, and just trying them out on the other 2 occasions with my own clubs.

Now I realise this question is like asking how long is a piece of string, but would this be considered a decent attempt at a round? I played with my brother, who does'nt really know much either (he has only played on and off over the last 2 years or so).

I'm just trying to get some idea of how this compares to other beginners...

Firstly, shooting 30 shots better is a massive improvement. Getting used to what clubs you like hitting and gaining confidence should see the 120 get down towards 100.
After that you'll be hooked so bad that nothing else matters in life and you'll need to get better equipment and improve month on month using new techniques and getting lessons.

To be honest, starting out, if you can hit the ball, get it up in the air and are enjoying it then you'll keep getting better.
    Lessons, practice and playing.

If you drop 30 more you're an 18 handicapper.

    Yours etc,
    GSH.

good score, but as you say its like asking how long is a piece of string. isome people pick it up very quick, ie shooting sub 100 within a couple of month while others take much longer.
if your enjoying it it doesn't matter what your scoring. i'd say give yourself a realistic target for your 1st year. something like shoot 1 sub 100 round. if you achiveve this then set another target and so foth! enjoy it!

Sounds like a great score to me, I have been trying properly for about a year now to go below 100 and my best is still 111 so you will prob get there before me.

As mentioned above, extremely addictive sport!!!

    Hi,
Not a bad first attempt but i would suggest for u to get a lesson before u go much further and hit the range as ofter as possiable, if u get a lesson now it will save a lot of heart ache later as a pro tries to change all the swing faults u have devoloped but if u start off with a good Grip, setup and posture the rest will come and it better do it now than later.

i completely agree with mike12 get in as many lessons in the next few months before you start getting a swing because as the man says "it will save a lot of heart ache later as a pro tries to change all the swing faults u have devoloped" i should know as i left getting lessons off for about 5 years and got them it took roughly a year to get a decent swing i am still playing off a 21 handicap so my advice is take his words of wisdom and you should be at my level faster than you think

    Thanks for the advice lads.
Played again yesterday on the same course, and scored 112! Got my first ever par, I was delighted with myself!

I've looked at some lessons alright, going to my first one tonight.

I'm in Cork, getting some lessons from Wayne O'Callaghan - found him very good.

I play reverse grip and love the game much more.

Went to lessons to learn to play the other way and it just makes the game boring and annoying.

I actually enjoy playing now, just enjoy the game for now and the exercise, you will have years ahead where it will do your f**in headin.

Anybody come across this book/system before?
Is it any good and worth the money?

It makes the claim that you can drop 7 strokes in 2 weeks, but are any of theses things any good?

I'm getting really hooked on this game, and am wondering if something like this could make a real difference...

  • Us bad players get far more value for money then the good golfers.

I get to take twice as many shots as the guy I play with, even though we pay the same amount.

    Joke's on him.

Give Shawn Clement a try first I'd say - loads of free videos on youtube
A good man to empty your head of nasty swing thoughts
