Thats a funny looking magpie!

I went out this morning to try and get a few magpies for one of the farmers. Nothing around except for the lambs waking up and looking for their morning feed.

I decided to walk the surrounding area in the search for nests for future reference and future spots to try get a few mags.

While walking along a ditch I look around and notice a red figure ~300-350 yards away along the other ditch the far side of the field. Now in a kneeling position I get to BB's out of the belt and hop them in the gun. now searching franticly through all my pockets for my caller but no sign, it was left at home after a few minutes deciding whether to bring it or not. I made the wrong decision!

I have one thing going for me and thats the wind which is blowing directly into me. I now am ready to start making my approach. Between me and the fox there is a hill starting to form just left of the fox. I use this to sneak up on the fox. After 2-3 mins of a leisurely walk I am near the brow of the hill. The peak of my hat just raising over the brow to allow me to have a look at my target. Lovely looking fox out for a bit of a stroll and completely unaware of my presence.

The fox is ~50 yards away from me but still to far to have a definite kill shot. I decide to round the hill in order to ambush the fox. Once at my second location which was 50 yards to the left I used the same tactics and only allowing the peak of my hat to be visible. Now prone on the ground wishing I had either the .223 or at least my caller I decide to try call with my mouth but nothing. Fox passing no remarks on the terrible attempts of a dieing rabbit goes on looking for worms and slugs. He is still to far and still around 50 yards away I still am not happy to take a shot incase the fox runs and dies a painful death.

All I can do now is wait till the fox rounds the next hill which is much taller than the one I am on now. I know the ditch is no more than 20 yards form the top of the next hill so I am guaranteed a shot and maybe even a fox.

I watch the fox start to round the hill but as he starts to round it he also starts to climb it and I am now thinking to myself "The b*****d is going to ruin my plan!". Luckily the fox disappears from my view. I now power walk up the hill waiting for a fox to appear.

Safety is off and gun is to my shoulder. The smell is getting stronger and stronger with every step. I am looking in all directions waiting to see my hard earned prize. Step by step my heart gets faster and faster. I take a step forward and the foxes head pops up. He is looking in the wrong direction. I quickly line up the bead on the barrel with the fox and pull the trigger. I have my prize! Distance was 7 yards. any closer and I could have hit him with the stock of the gun. One less fox many lambs saved. Nice looking vixen all the same.

When you strip it sown is there a gas port (hole) in the barrel or near the chamber that uses some of the gas to push a piston back which is spring loaded and drives the action rearward and then forward
    234.jpg
Remington Versamax has an ingenious way of controlling gas on all shells of 2 &3/4 3" Magnums
Or is it driven rearward by the inertia/recoil
    Or like this

There is a small hole nearly half way up the barrel where it fits over the tube for the cartridges (if you know what I mean). It also has a spring.

    Sounds gas operated spring fed

The spring pushed new round into chamber where in the other design the spring damps the recoil and uses it to load.

two different ways of doing the same thing.

Most semi auto rifles are gas operated and some have a gas regulator for different ammo strengths as low power shells will cause jams on some if the spring damper is two strong
