I normally get an indy to service my car, but I said I'd give it a go myself this time. I noticed that the coolant tank was a bit off colour. I cleaned the outside thinking it was dirty. It wasn't.
When I took off the cap there was a thick layer of brown gunk inside.
Inside the expansion tank looks all brown, rusty?
I wiped off the gunk with a cloth and noticed some metal shavings mixed with the gunk. What has been damaged to cause this rust and wear? Is it going to cause me problems?

From the what it says in the manual I guess someone had been topping it up with only water...

Probably bits of rotten rad internals, if the rad has all it's fins and looks ok just lash in fresh coolant after flushing it and you should be fine for another couple of years at least.

It would be a good idea to run a bottle of radiator flush through the cooling system with the engine running to ensure that the radiator does not show signs of blockage in the future (and potential head gasket damage). Refill the cooling system after with the correct percentage of coolant to water.
