1.6 Focus Manual Vs. Auto

Looking at two 1.6 Focus Zetecs at the minute, one manual and one auto ('06 petrols).

I have no experience of autos, but the impression (probably cliched) I would have of them would be less sharp, not as responsive. Am I right or wrong? Reading on here, the larger the engine the better.

Anyone with a 1.6 auto care to share their experiences?

I haven't driven either yet, just looking for advice first.

That's a 4 speed box IIRC. Most of the more modern ones have 6/7 speeds. That said I know a Ford dealer whose mother has one so not that bad I suppose.

my mum has a 1.6 automatic and loves it. I've driven it a few times and it seems fine to me too

    +1

    Especially in a 4sp auto.

I came across this site yesterday, it says the manuals average 40 mpg and the autos 35 mpg.

we've a manual. it'll do 40 mpg on the motorway alright, but not much more.

on the daily commute, its more like 31/32mpg
